DAB aerial sent FM Squiffy
Hey! Hoping the collective and more informed people here might have a better idea than me!

I fitted a new Sony head unit over Chrimbo, two aerial ins one for the car aerial (FM) and one for the DAB. Been running FM only and it's been superb. I connected up the DAB aerial yesterday (sticky to glass one in the alpine window), routing the wires past the heater controls and in the back there. Since doing this my FM signal has died a death.

So far I have:

1. Disconnected DAB, no improvement to the FM signal
2. Disconnected DAB and FM, what little FM there was disappeared completely
3. Checked the cable is connected to the standard LR aerial, it hasn't come loose or anything.
4. Tried turning off the power supply to DAB aerial, no improvement

Has anyone got any cunning thoughts? Ps they are definitely in the right sockets etc

Cheers!

Try running a chunky cable from FM aerial to engine block to check if its an earth issue for the aerial

If FM aerial is amplified, check power supply to aerial

Thanks kmac!! It's the standard 2004 Land Rover aerial, would this have an earth normally and where might it be? Wondering if I've dislodged it somehow if it happened to be behind the dash?

Thanks!!

It is easy to damage the standard aerial if you have pulled the cable through the bulk head a few times

The earth in the standard aerial is from aerial connecting to the wing at point where it is attached to the car. There is no additional cable.

If you have a multimeter - check that the outer section of the aerial plug has continuity to the part of the aerial that touched the wing (underside of wing)

Also check that there is no short from tip of aerial plug to part that of aerial that touches underside of wing ( this should be complete open circuit)

Hey, well i removed the dab aerial and wiring and guess what, went back to normal! I can only assume the dab aerial cable was providing some sort of bad interference.

I'm now going to go down the route of a splitter Smile Thanks for the help!

I thoroughly recommend the Kinetic 7002 splitter from DAB on Wheels, not cheap but it sure does work Thumbs Up

We live in a very marginal DAB area and I get excellent reception. Tested it between Somerset and Berkshire a few times, using the A303 which has a few bad reception areas on FM, and DAB reception has been faultless.

Cheers Bob!

When you installed it, does it need a separate 12V feed or will the antenna power supply work (my radio can supply power via the Dab aerial cable)?

It does look good, they do a slightly less expensive powered one at 49, may get that!

They suggest taking the feed from the switched input power supply to the radio, which I did.
The instructions do tell you to switch the DAB aerial feed off.

Very easy to take the feed from the switched supply, once you have found it ! I stripped the insulation off and soldered a new wire inline, insulated it all up and fitted a male bullet connector to the other end. Put a female bullet on the splitter 12v supply, connected up and job done.
