Hello! I have an issue I believe is not rare, but I could not find another post describing exactly the same symptom. Everybody seems to have hard engine failures, but I think this is different, as it is not really hard.
Suppose I'm in 2nd gear and going on a flat road, with engine using almost no power. When I start pressing the accelerator pedal, like if I was speeding up to change to 3rd, the engine fails randomly. It doesn't really fails, but the acceleration is not smooth as it should, even if I take very easy with the pedal... It generally happens when accelerating from, say, 1800rpm, up to a bit over 2200rpm. The same symptom occurs from 1st to 2nd or from 3rd to 4th. My first guess is it could be related to the turbine, as it actuates around 2000rpm, as far as I know... Another thing that makes me think about the turbine is that, if I go up to 3000rpm and change to the next gear (while the turbine is still rotating very fast), there is no power loss. What do you think? What should I inspect? Hello, Tim!
I went to my mechanic a few days ago and he [sic] "reset the ECU to its defaults". After that, he said, I should test to see if the problem was gone, but that didn't happen. If you don't mind, please post your experience after the remap. ok i did a thorough test today and it's still here, but much less present than before. Yesterday while i was testing the new remap i went really high in the RPMs and my guess would be that it helped maybe clean a bit the engine... this is just suppositions... maybe you could try this...
Still investigating, the EGR(as its off in the remap) is not in cause, neither is the ECU... as you said the turbo could be... quite an expensive piece though... Cheers Tim |

I read the entire thread and it really seems to be the same or at least a very similar problem. And it enforces my suspects of a problem with the turbo. Scary... I'll try taking the car to a mechanic to have the turbo fan tested. 2020: Defender 110 SW 300 Tdi 2004 Alpine White

Check the loom around the Turbo modulator for damage. Also remove the modulator plug and look for any damaged wiring into plug. Follow the loom around the engine (No 1 in below diagram, modulator plug is circled) to the PCM and check for damage especially around where the red engine lift bracket is.

There should really be a "thanks" button in this forum.
Thank you VERY MUCH! I'll check this out and post the results as soon as I can. [off-topic begins] It won't happen very soon, though, since I'm going out for an expedition tomorrow and will be back in around 30 days. BTW, anybody who's interested in knowing more about South America can follow the expedition at www.ricaamerica.com.br. Hi,
I've checked the loom your are talking about in the surrounding of the turbo but mine seems to be fine, though i've checked the movement of the actuator lever, and it seems to be fine but the sound it makes ( i guess in the exhaust part of the turbine housing is quite metallic is that normal? shouldn't it be lubricated ? Depending on the angle i was moving the actuator lever, i could feel a bit of resistance in the movement. Don't really know what to think about it. Do you think this resistance is normal as the blades rub against the housing? Cheers Tim |

Mine was doing this only on sea level, you can try disconnect the EGR plug and go for a run to see if it's better. I did this and no more hesitating, less smoke and better mileage. This will generate an error and the MIL light will go on. The perfect solution is to blank the EGR by reprogramming the ECU. Regards |

I'll try this as soon as I take it out of the garage again, Rafa! Will post the results here later. Thank for the hint! 2020: Defender 110 SW 300 Tdi 2004 Alpine White 2013-2017: Defender 110 S 2.4 (Puma) 2008 Stornoway Gray 2002-2005: Defender 90 CSW 300 Tdi Dark Green |

Interesting stuff, I went to the dealer and as usual when you have the engeneer on board to show him the problem, it doesn't do it. But i described the symptoms and they proposed to change the fuel filter and add some kind of additive to remove the water that could be in the lines. And advised me to refuel with better fuel quality and so far the problem as been minimised not to say disappeared...
My EGR as been deactivated with a reprogramming of the ECU Cheers Tim |
