Electrics - brake lights wont work when lights are on?
morning all

please could i have some advice on this one!

yesterday afternoon i fitted WIPAC LED plug in units to the 90, along with number plate light unit (everything apart from reverse and fog lights).

got to the end, everything worked apart from when side lights or more are on the fog wanted to show on the dash board, press the button for it to turn on and it wouldn't work at all (dash light shone brighter though as if it was on)... i had not touched this! so i thought it might be the wiring on the number plate light so i disconnected it but the fog continued to show!

in a moment of stupidity i put the bullet connectors for the wiring of the number plate the wrong way round...... Embarassed

now i still have the fog issue BUT also the rear brake lights wont work when the lights are on, lights off and they are fine. the number plate light wont work at all and neither will the 3rd brake light in the door... everything else works fine!

i have check every fuse related to lights and they are all fine!
they only thing that doesn't look fine is this 30a big fuse (or should it look like that) -

its a 60 plate 90 xs.

cheers
chad

Obvious question perhaps....Was it all working before you messed with it? If you have a multimeter check for a voltage either side of the 30 amp fuse.

It is almost certainly an earthing issue. Thumbs Up If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!!

Agree that its most likely an earth fault. It is possible that the symptoms were present but to a lesser degree with filament bulbs fitted to the rear lights.
Has the vehicle had any work done to it that required the transfer box removed?
The first place I would check is the earth connection on the right hand side of the transfer box - see this http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic31859.html thread.

The led number plate may have been killed by connecting it the wrong way round.

its a fault that's been introduced to it , ok could still be a earth fault but could not have been like it before as a earth fault will some a lot more with filament bulbs due to high load on the earth

my advise would be work backwards and check wiring if that oks ok then refit each old light and test the lights as you go to find where the problem is

you may find its something like in one new light plug the pins are in wrong place etc

yes check that fuse , doesn't look right inside
