Northern Ireland 2000 Defender 90 Td5 CSW Epsom Green

Fitted a Maplins central locking kit today to the two front doors (90 CSW). Not tackled the rear door yet but hope to later tonight. As I have a 270 alarm, I have no handy means of attaching the central locking outputs to it, so I'm working with a remote receiver with fob in the meantime, while I watch that famous auction site for a 280 alarm.

The Defender is a nightmare when it comes to routing wiring. I've fitted the genuine rubber wiring gaiters between the doors and the bulkhead but getting the wiring from there to the module was a right pain.

I'm really pleased with the results and pushing a button certainly beats faffing about for a key on a cold wet evening!

Jon.

Further to the post above, I have now installed the central locking to the rear door.

Hmmmm, quite a bit more involved than the front doors.... I had to split the door lock mechanism (non-central locking type) and drill the latch to take the operating rod. I then machined some new rivets and tried the mechanism. No good. The solenoid struggled to operate the lock, due to the strength of the torsion spring used to keep the latch in open or locked position.

I drilled out the rivets again and removed the torsion spring on the latch - much better! Another four rivets machined and fitted and....... success.

I'd recommend anyone without central locking in their Defender to go for it. The kit cost me about £30 and another £10 for the remote receiver.

Need to check in the morning that I've not missed any bits as the light was fading by the time I'd finished, but I've washed the Defender this afternoon and gone to work on correcting the paintwork.

She's in very good condition for 4 years of age and had been polished before collection. However there was quite a lot of scratches that needed some TLC. I could have got a paint detailer in to get to work on her, but instead I've had a go myself and I think I've not done a bad job.

Managed to get a coat of Carnauba Wax on her right at the last minute and that's the bit I just need to double check in the morning to make sure there is no residue left. It possibly will need some further work, but from what I could see the paintwork was going in the right direction.

Fitted my new LED number plate light, this one seems to be for once up to the job and works well.
Time will tell, but it's bright but not too much, white and not blue tinged.
Fits well too so no complaints, hopefully it'll be a good buy with SMD LED's in it.
Might get some photos tomorrow if anyone wants any?
