Thought it was about time I shared my camping kitchen. I have been using this for around 18 months now and it works very well.
A def2 member called Chopcat motivated dm to build this with his excellent trailer build. I took a lot of my ideas from Drifta...an Australian manufacturer who specialise in this type of stuff. After browsing their website I figured I could build something similar...and so the research started. Brackets, handles, latches, telescopic tube, Formica, protective cappings. It took hours to find the right stuff. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge The front panel detaches and forms the support for the working surface, which swings open from the top. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge It has a drawer and a pull out shelf for a washing up bowl. The dimensions are based around a Coleman petrol stove and all our camping utensils fit inside. The only other thing we use is a Cobb. Just to add, I still haven't managed to build my 'patriot cage' copy yet but it is on the list! She is now all packed for a great overland journey...you know the stuff, ground anchors, sand ladders, boil in a bag food, water purification.....if only!! The realities of family camping are slightly different, nappies, bottles, toys and more "stuff" appearing last minute from the house.

I have finally recovered from the cost of a new gearbox so have restarted the modding!
Nothing major but something that has been bugging me since I bought it. The previous owner had cut off the middle leg of my roof rack in order to fit it around the windscreen protector, which meant the rails were not spreading the weight as they should...well, at all really. So I bought a roof bar designed for roll cages from safety devices, and immediately cut it in half with an angle grinder.
It was designed to clamp to the middle diagonal tubes of a roll cage and my configuration only has the horizontals directly above the doors. I had to extend it by nearly 6 inches and alter the angles of the brackets to suit the new horizontal position it was going to sit in. I just need to find a good aluminium welder now to reweld the originals back in further back, behind the windscreen protector to spread the weight on the rear leg. Any ideas? 2002 110 td5 |

My security cage is now back from powder coating so it is time to share it with you all. I really liked the idea of the patriot cage but could not justify the expense, so I decided to make my own.
With the cost of workshop consumables and powder coating included I managed to build it for bang on £200, which compared to the £650 patriot I didn't think was too bad. The only drilling to the vehicle were four holes in the bottom of each hoop leg and two rivnuts fitted either side of the tailgate for the door opening.

where did you go for the powder Coating and did you find someone to do the Ali welding on the roof rack?

i used Crimble for the powder coating. I dropped it off yesterday at about 1500 and he phoned me at 0830 this morning to say it was done. Top job, all for £50! They put on the zinc base coat as well, unlike many powder coaters, he informed me.
I still haven't got around to finding anyone for the ali welding. A mate of mine has a really good Tig welder but I would be relying on him to do it because I am not practised enough at Tig welding aluminium...and he is always really busy...and not too bothered about how things "look"! Especially when he is rushing. He has recommended somewhere in slaithwaite, or Marsden...can't quite remember, so I might give them a call. Fitted the ARB yet? 2002 110 td5 |

I asked around but no one knew any recommended Ali welders my front arb is on but haven't got the rear bushes and brackets yet so hopefully in the next couple of weeks and I'll try and get my new springs on too |

Im hoping my roof rack will fit behind the roll hoop but will see tomorrow! Love the layout of your rear stowage aswell, very well thought out |
