I have spent a bit of time at work in a 2.2 130 and a 2.2 110 (very early one, 12MY) and both seem very quiet to me, the loudest thing being the chunky mud tyres or the radio! 2011 110 USW

I fixed mine by setting the large outward knob on the radio as far as it will go clockwise.
After this almost all the gearing issues, vibration and engine rattles went away |

Thought I'd just post a quick update.
Unfortunately I've had no joy at all. The dealer refused to even try the injector relearn, and maintains that the dreadful clatter is 'just normal diesel knock'. For some reason they've been completely obtuse with me and seem to be treating me now as if I'm just a problem customer. My new defender experience has gone from bad to worse recently, with two LR assistance call outs, one for a coolant hose coming off (seemingly never attached properly) and the engine overheating, and now for a undiagnosed alarm fault which had me locked out and unable to start with the car immobilised. So in two months of ownership its spent two and a half weeks in the garage and is now to go back for the fifth time... Seriously considering handing this one back now and seeking an alternative, likely from a more cooperative dealer. 2015 Defender 90 XS SW 1997 Defender 90 HT |

I am afraid I cannot add any good news, my 2013 2.2 Puma was definitely not fit for purpose and spent a lot of time going back and forth to the dealer. My experience tells me that if something is physically broken eg your cooling hose which became disconnected, they can actually fix it, however, if it is a noise or an intermittent fault of transmission shunt, viscous fan not operating as expected, turbo's screaming under certain loads, engine rattle, then forget it. Stock answer 'They are all like that to some extent, some are better than others, some worse'. Afraid I came to the realisation that I either had to put up with it or off load it, hope you do not end up in that position and you get yours fixed. Just for comparison, despite all its problems my 2.2 Puma did not ratlle, in fact it had a rather boring muted dull sound with a very steady tickover when stationary. (Of course the squeal from the viscous fan and the noise a the turbo hose blowing yet again could have been masking it!) Good luck

Nick,
As Martin touched on do you have the option of another service centre? If not I would imagine even doing an injector learn for the sake of good 'customer relations' would not be too much to expect? You could also try dropping Ryan on here a 'pm' to try and get a bit of clout behind your obvious dissatisfaction. Good luck. As I said before I would be minded to try number 2 before number 1. Another dealer might well be interested in sorting it, they vary massively. 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |

forgive me as I'm a LR numpty but from my experience my first question would be in respect of the injector knock......if you rev it in neutral / stationary how does it sound? If ok there's a chance it's transmission and not the engine...granted the engine will sound different under load.
question here for you all - does your diff lock lever stay put over to the left or does it wander back towards the left. Albeit last night after giving a wiggle and some lube it stayed over to the right (no if buts maybe that's what happened and it drove beautifully). I then tried engaging and disengaging diff lock and not only does the lever wander back towards the left but all the knocking and horrible transmission issues are back . so tonight I'll back under with some more lube giving a wiggle. |

I wouldn't worry about it. A couple of years ago I started a thread entitled 'another rattly Puma post' which gets resurrected from time to time. The main gist of it was pinking type noises on acelleration.
To cut a long story short I had a re learn - no difference and finally I took it to James French in Standlake, Oxon. They have a Defender genius - Steve who put mine through every diagnostic hurdle possible and declared he would be more than happy if he owned it. The pinking was just a bit of diesel knock which, while possible to tune out, would have adverse effects on performance and economy, he said. That was good enough for me ! So 3 years and 4 months into Defender ownership I just ignore it because performance and mpg have got increasingly better with time. The mileage I do most of the time is not good for a utility type engine ( very short trips, long periods standing idle) and I'm always amazed at how my mpg is always around 25-26 mpg these days - which is better than last year and the year before ! |

Just my 2p worth as a diesel engineer who drives a 2.2 transit.... All out trannys sound like it as do all the 2.2 defenders out our sites. It's all due to injection pressures, your old 300 tdi would have had injection pressures of about 4000psi (at best) these modern common rail engines are running in excess of 22000psi (!) to get emissions down. Hence the very pronounced 'knock'. This will alter in severity depending on: load, engine temp, ambient temp, fuel grade, atmospheric pressure, passive regen in operation etc etc etc, hence why it isn't always there...... |

Yes, there's a second LR dealer in Dungannon, which whilst not really convenient is reportedly very knowledgable. I'll perhaps have a word with them and see if there's anything they can do for me. Thank you also for the link to Ryan, I'll certainly drop him a line as the response from both the supplying dealer and LR customer services has been terrible. 2015 Defender 90 XS SW 1997 Defender 90 HT |

They may well be interested in sorting it, but after the string of issues I've had from day one, I'd still rather a truck that was put together properly in the first place. Mines a classic case of a Friday afternoon car, and to be fair I've divulged only a couple of the multiple problems I've had. 2015 Defender 90 XS SW 1997 Defender 90 HT |

I am on my fourth defender, had two TD5's a 2.4 and now a 2.2 I know people may flame me but you must have an idea what you are letting yourself in for when you buy one surely? If you want silky smooth and easy to drive you have bought the wrong vehicle, a Honda Jazz or a Mazda MX5 will drive so easily you wont hear the engine running on tickover and gear changes are super light but sorry but not a heavy working vehicle hand built with a massive ladder chassis, enormous diffs, propshafts, transfer box etc etc etc
On a positive they will haul heavy loads, drive through thick mud and last forever if you pamper them. They get better with more miles and you do adapt to their quirky ways. I thought long and hard before I bought mine and I did think about a Ford ranger pick up but I love the character of the Defender and its good points outweigh its bad points. Mine gets used for deliveries and swallows heavy loads with ease, I love the character and high driving position as well as the smile it puts on my face while I drive it. If you change gear at three thousand revs you will find gearchanges between first and second improve a lot, also a slight hesitancy as you pass through neutral as you change gear helps too. Obviously if you have a dodgy one you need to get it sorted but a lot of what people experience is fairly par for the course. 110 Hardtop |

You can't hear my engine at tickover, it's probably one of the smoothest Diesel engines I've ever had, but under load it sounds like a toolbox kicked down the stairs. They don't all sound like that, I know this first hand, so it doesn't seem unreasonable that anyone who has suffered this issue would be disappointed at dropping 20-30k on a new Defender and it not performing at its best. As far as 'knowing what you're letting yourself in for', you expect certain foibles in old Landies, it doesn't dissapoint me that my, almost 20 yr old, 300tdi lets in water left right and centre, but the fact that my 2 month old tdci has been secretly pooling water in the load bed and rotting away the carpet after two months is unacceptable. As is the engine boiling itself, the electrical gremlins, and the various other issues suffered. 2015 Defender 90 XS SW

In my opinion the latest 2.2 defender is'nt as good a vehicle as the 2.4, td5 and the 300/200tdi, especially when you consider the time lapse between them. The 200tdi was about 110bhp in the in the 90's the new 2.2 tdci is 120 bhp in 2015. 110 bhp was respectable in the 90's, 120bhp in 2015 is a joke. My 2.2 110 is the slowest thing on the road, HGV,s pull away faster than I can. The previous gear boxes were a lot smoother and nicer to use too. The only thing I think is a significant improvement is the seating but now its a 7 seater rather than a 12 seater so its horses for courses.
I do regret buying a 2.2 I would have been better off spending 4-5 grand doing up my TD5 110. |
