I have got into the habit of whenever I select reverse I always pull the transfer lever back into hi - no diff lock before I move just to make sure its out and not accidentally engaged.
Never is but its always good to double check thing sometimes. Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter ![]() |

It's dark n wet outside so not the best conditions for crawling underneath trying to lube the linkage but as a quick fix I've given it a squirt of acf50.
Anyhow while there was a little surprised that the long L shaped link (looks like a bit of pressed steel in L shaoe) was quite loose, loosen enough for it to rattle (just about). |

Yeah, it seems a very flimsy linkage..! The little bit that goes between that bar and the lever from the gearbox is even more flimsy...
![]() No wonder it seizes up.... ![]() Cheers Simon |

Go anywhere.......
So long as you treat it like glass and there's no frost cos then you'll struggle to in and start up ![]() |

Ericv,
just to let you know last night I was under the truck giving linkage a gentle rattle and good spray of acf50. this mornings drive was absolutely faultless ....I mean mega ![]() once at my destination I tried putting it into difflock. light came on, did a very little drive forwards backs and then out of diff lock. took 5 second plus for light to go out and I'm not sure if that was as a result of me driving forward or not? also lever wonders back to the central position now so I'm not sure if its a case of more acf50 or if the linkage needs adjusting? ![]() |

Haven't managed to repeat getting dif lever to remain over to right and things are back to how they've been before rattly.
so 2 questions really; - is it a known problem where diff lock might by itself sometimes stick on without the light on dash showing and without it being obvious while driving, - if not can anyone give another explanation for the front tyres scrubbing on the inside and outside edges (it's definitely scrubbing and not due to under inflation)? many thanks, |

The switch for light is activated by the selector fork in the box and the only ways in which it can fail to indicate a locked diff is if the switch or bulb has failed, or the switch has become unscrewed from the casing.
I seriously doubt that even the most inept and unaware driver could drive any distance on a hard surface with the diff locked without becoming aware that there is something amiss. The handling of the vehicle will be degraded to a significant and noticeable degree. That being said, there's always one... |

Re. the second question, yes!
Incorrect wheel alignment, defective tyres, excessive cornering speed, incorrect inflation pressures, bent wheels, bent axle, damaged steering components, incorrect axle alignment, loose wheelnuts, defective wheelbearings, and possibly a few other things too! |

many thanks Blackwolf,
hopefully I'm not 'the one' in which case; Incorrect wheel alignment, defective tyres, excessive cornering speed, incorrect inflation pressures, bent wheels, bent axle, damaged steering components, incorrect axle alignment, loose wheelnuts, defective wheelbearings, and possibly a few other things too! wheel bearings have all been done, tyre pressure is ok, confident wheels are ok, high speed cornering is out of the question ( ![]() wheel nuts weren't loose albeit they weren't as tight as I might have expected? perhaps its just dodgy tyres but surely it would be most strange for me to have 2 dodgy tyres just on the front - sure others would have experienced the same too? |

Swap front and rear over to see if you get the same effect.
What tyres are you using? |

tyres are the standard continentals. |

Your axle stands are a higher load rating than your wheels, so yes
![]() So long as you use a pair per axle and aren't trying to balance it somehow ![]() |

was planning on putting 1 stand under each diff case but only swapping 2 diagonal wheels at any one time, ie 1 stand per 1 wheel but wouldn't need to keep moving the stands around.
good thinking - yes ? |
