I've seen these before and although they might not be to everyone's taste or budget the basic idea is quite good. 2007 (57) Defender 90 (Sold) Looking for another to replace it. The road less travelled.... is a muddy one! |

Drawers seem the best solution so far.

What about mounting them vertically to the rack ladder(s). Would stop people climbing onto the roof also?

When greenlaning, we usually go for a 4-5 days, meaning that morning, noon, evening en night I need to be able to open the door as well as get on top to open/close the tent.
Not sure, but I think it'll be in my way then. I am also going to check if I cannot mount them on the back of the roofrack, at least I have access to the door. The tent is only an issue morning and evening, so, if I can easily remove, may not be that much of a problem. |

How about making some brackets to lift the jerry cans etc up a bit and make false floor to slide them into at the rear sideways in 👍 It's good to be back from the dark side

Problem is: they are already the highest point. This would raise them another 20cm.
Not easy is it? |

This is how I mount mine on our overland 110.Just using a couple of straps.
It's cheap & easy, you could give it a go & if not happy with it,It's cost next to nothing. Marc Click image to enlarge |

That where the shovel will be mounted. It's now on the side of the roofrack but essentially is a branch hook, so that will be moved.
I think when I build the roofrack branchglider I will see if I can mount it on that. Otherwise the drawers are still te best option. I see some have shortened their boards. What is the minimum you find to be still usefull? I think mine's 1.5m and may need trimming to the width of the rack. |

If putting them in the drawers like I did, you're limited to the length of the rear load space. In mine (given the drawers take some of the space) it's around 1m.
For the times I've used them, 1m has been fine, but your usage my be different. Cheers Simon |

Could you remove your side steps and have these fitted there. Slide in and out and serve a double purpose? Mounted a bit like this, rotated 90 degrees:

2 options that would immediately spring to mind,
a) mount them on the side of the truck at the rear, in a pair of channels, over the rear windows (one each side) BUT MOUNT THEM SO THAT THE REAR SIDE DOORS CAN STILL OPEN, ie slightly further back, and so that they overhang at the rear. This not only protects the rear windows from damage offroad, but also prevents forced entry. There is already a certain amount of 'overhang' with the ladder and spare wheel anyway. b) alternatively sling them underneath the roof rack, side by side, again on sliding channel sections, either at the back , over the door, or over the sloping bit, but that might result in muddy water running down the screen. |
