Past 2 yrs in a row , I'v come around a corner and said BMW X driver in a ditch . " can you help me mate " ? Neither time did I get a penny for rolling bout tying shackles and ropes . So this yr it's a " sorry mate but I'm stuck in 2WD "
Unless of course there's a flash of eye lids or a big wallet .

Simpler solution: "Certainly! Grab your rope and we'll get started. You don't have a rope? Oh..."

What I don't get is how many people believe they have some sort of right to drive, train, fly, etc. where ever they want when ever they want and that some how the "authorities" are to blame if 10 foot of snow prevents them from doing it.

Where I grew up in a rural part of Hampshire in the 70's and 80's we could get snowed in for weeks at a time and we just got on with it. We always had enough food to survive (tins, large freezer, etc.). It was not someone else's fault and if we were that desperate we would use the farm machinery to clear it ourselves.

Fixed. Charged battery overnight and a long run the next day. Followed by taking it to work this week. Should use it at least once Monday to Friday ... It's been going 7-10 days without turning a wheel ... No wonder the battery was flat. 2001 Td5 CSW (weekend and snow mobile) Plenty of lights, M/T tyres EGR delete, roofrack, swing away wheel carrier, snorkel.

In the winter of 2010 I attempted to tow a Citroen out of a snow drift. I managed to pull the towing eye off the chassis which then ripped his bumber off. The towing eye then went through my rear window, bear this in mind when helping others. If it had hit someone it could have killed them.

Towing eyes especially the screw in type are not really suitable for recovery work, they're only suitable for normal on road towing. 2005 Td5 90 XS

it is very difficult to work out from one or two sentences what may or may not have happen. What technique and what equipment was used?

For instance use a kinetic rope technique with a metal chain (not that I am suggesting that was used) and the peak forces will go through the roof so to speak. It is a mixture of what equipment is used and what technique is used.

What I will be doing in next couple of days is throwing in the back of our vehicles the snow shovels.

You are stuck in snow mate? There is a shovel YOU get digging and when YOU have shifted the snow I will consider giving you a tug out IF I consider it safe to do so and YOU accept responsibility

Shift the snow, reduce forces required = less chance of something going pear shaped.

Please note IF PEOPLE are safe that is the end of peoples responsibility. The recovery of a lump of metal and rubber etc is irrelevant compared to people being safe. If ANY doubts exist about the recovery leave it to the recovery organisations.

Also use a big bright dampner over the tow rope.

I tend to use a flourscent padded jacket. Was assisting a BOC wagon up an icy hill using a 10m snatch strap (YES 10 m is illegal length, max length is 4.5m to be road legal} BOC wagon was lit up like a ferking christmas tree with hazards going and hazard light bars going. Yes I had hazards on and we were proceeding up the incline at a steady 5-10 mph when dip stick decides to overtake BOC wagon and dive in between us. OOOPS there is a big flag in the middle, quick change of plan and he is on the wrong side of a pedestrian refuge island. A very good job no vehicle was coming down the hill.

it is not just the recovery but the other bloody idiots on the road who have left their last remaining brain cell in the office and have to get home before 6 o'clock or their tea might get cold!

So think very carefully, YES you/your vehicle might be competent to assist but can you control the other (deep breaths) idiots on the road who can put you in danger??

If in doubt leave it to the recovery organistations once people are safe.

I can't say as I've actually been 'snowed in'. Yes the snow has been pretty deep in the rural areas I've lived in with 6' drifts blocking the lanes etc but for most of my life I've been involved in farming and usually with livestock. You can't ignore the fact that animals rely on us to feed them and make sure there's water that they can drink. So even if the livestock are housed, feed and water still needs to be given no matter what the weather.
I've taken some unorthodox routes to where I've wanted to be and in some various 'vehicles' but never has any animal been left wanting. Apart from the old cliche that 'they're all gods creatures', they were in my charge, part of my job and my livelihood.
With farming you are living with all that Mother Nature has to throw at you so you just get on with it.
