it is very difficult to work out from one or two sentences what may or may not have happen. What technique and what equipment was used?

For instance use a kinetic rope technique with a metal chain (not that I am suggesting that was used) and the peak forces will go through the roof so to speak. It is a mixture of what equipment is used and what technique is used.

What I will be doing in next couple of days is throwing in the back of our vehicles the snow shovels.

You are stuck in snow mate? There is a shovel YOU get digging and when YOU have shifted the snow I will consider giving you a tug out IF I consider it safe to do so and YOU accept responsibility

Shift the snow, reduce forces required = less chance of something going pear shaped.

Please note IF PEOPLE are safe that is the end of peoples responsibility. The recovery of a lump of metal and rubber etc is irrelevant compared to people being safe. If ANY doubts exist about the recovery leave it to the recovery organisations.

Would not a singed peace of paper that he/she accepts responsibility, liability and all costs help in case things go wrong?

Probably not, at least not much. There are two immediate issues I could anticipate if it went pear-shaped. One is that there are certain liabilities and responsibilities which you cannot avoid or pass off, so if, for example, you commit an offence whilst helping them (whether civil or criminal), or if there is an accident causing injury, or damage to a third party, you're going to be shafted anyway.

The other issue is that in effect the signed paper would need to be a legally binding contract and comply with the necessary legislation (such as the Unfair Contract Term Act 1977, etc) and it is doubtful that many of us could produce a suitable document at all, let alone on the spot.

If you were doing this as a business, ie as a recovery operator, you will have a contract in place, you will have appropraite insurance, and you will have training (or at least some demonstrable assessment of competence) which covers the necessary bases. As an individual, you won't, so be careful.

Remember above all the basic mantra - engage the brain before any other piece of equipment!

Also be prepared to REFUSE to help people.

IF you are unhappy/unsure/do not have the right kit/right experience/right licence drive off.

I was waved down by a driver of a broken down Jap 4x4 which had another car attached via an A frame. He wanted me to tow the complete rig to top of the hill.

I do not have a showmans licence so can not tow two 'trailers' at the same time so I suggested that I would do it in two tows. Other driver insisted it was perfectly legal as the other car was attached via an A frame. I got a bad feeling about the situation also about the drivers attitude and as the driver was safe I drove off.

Some people might think it is mean/unfriendly etc but it is my decision and I would rather err on the side of caution/safety.

I helped someone just once, not snow but in mud.
I ended up with damage, they didn't, promised they'd pay took them at their word.
Never did....
Wasn't too bothered as it wasn't extremely expensive and it was environmental damage not their fault.
Never the less, I wouldn't have been there if it wasn't for them.

A couple in a Peugeot down a muddy lane in mid winter with an AA van stuck in front. (One can guess why!)

Maybe there was three. Embarassed Whistle

Near where I live there is a area of common land popular with walkers. The amount of people in cars from sports cars to 4x4 who will drive into a deep area of mud and ruts come back after their walk and are surprised they are stuck. I have towed out loads sometimes never receiving a thankyou. The only time I do it now is if young kids are stranded with their parents or the driver is old, the rest need to learn from their mistakes..
