I bought a tool off eBay for a few ££'s. Works a treat, I've used it several times, it makes removing the wheel a doddle.

Loosen center nut but leave on, put knees under bottom of wheel, and a hand on the top of wheel, pull wheel with knees and hand whilst giving the center shaft a good tap with a soft hammer. That's my method, if pulling doesn't work.

Be careful if you use the hammer method as the shaft is collapsible.

Having BIG trouble getting the wheel off the soft top, it's completely and utterly jammed.
Have tried a puller which pulled the threads out of the wheel Plus Gas hasn't unjammed it. Can't apply heat as the wheel will melt 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |

How many splines and what steering wheel do you have. I have seen a few Defenders where some nutter in the past who owned the Defender has hammered on a 36 spline steering wheel on to a 48 spline shaft and once they do that it is near impossible to remove….

I have to say thank you then Martin as that web page over the years has come in very handy indeed
Glad its not a hammered on wheel anyway If all else fails trying to remove the steering wheel you could try a freeze spray. Then let it thaw, it just might break the grip of the two types of metal. |
