United Kingdom 2010 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 SW Stornoway Grey
Small point but why didn't they use a cleaned up Transfer Box
as part of their demonstration unit... Shocked

Main point does it really work... Question

What if you have a 'Rat Trap Defended Defender'
and it's the victim of a attempted theft started and
someone REALLY tried to drive off... Embarassed

The claim is they can't.

Some interesting quotes in the feature...

Dumb quote...
'it’s British designed and built and made from real metal'... Thumbs Up that's good then.

Eye opening quote...
'We recommend spending around 10 per cent of a vehicle’s value on protecting it from theft'... Sad

Interesting idea though... and will keep an eye on this
would like to see some real testing to be reported. SKIP

yes wondered that myself as low 1 has some real grunt. But I still have to rock the car to engage it, nothing just slots in without half a meter of movement. Now that's real UK engineering. Very Happy My Defender and travels

it locks the drum not the shoes by the look of it on the video

yes welded to standard backplate , will be done on a exchange basis maybe

im trying to work out the high cost here.

OEM backplates are only £50. but the new looking handbrake drum interests me.. maybe a custom cast drum that contains a locking mech similar to 'park' on a auto gearbox?

Anybody fitted this Rat Trap to a Puma 2.4 or 2.2 yet?
Any feedback as to ease (or non ease) of fitting and usability?
Real life pictures of where the lock is sticking out, quality of the locking mechanism and key?
Still seems an interesting, discreet security feature and surprised it went totally quiet around it here. I know it is not cheap, but wonder if there possibly is a different catch than just price?

Hello ericvv

I have been back to have a look at this product a few times since it was posted on D2N.

http://www.spinney-engineering.com/

The offer isn't clear enough in my view, basic proposition is interesting, but I just don't get real confidence
from the web site, poor description, no detail, and the responses to the initial observations from facebook followers from spinney-engineering doesn't move on the understanding of what they are offering.

OK they may be on to something but I worry when I read...

it’s British designed and built and made from real metal. And being underneath the vehicle, there’s very little room to tamper with it.

I've pointed this out before but 'real metal'... Exclamation
and if there is very little room to tamper with it....how easy is it to fit...no detail...no video

it’s been a boon over the last few days while defrosting his Land Rover – he can leave it running safe in the knowledge that no-one could drive off with the Defender.

I hope it does work as claimed because a unattended vehicle left running (keys in) will not be insured with most companies... Exclamation

£ 490.00 for all series modles (models) (1948/ 1984) and £590.00 for all defender modles (models) from 1984 to 2015 with free UK DELIVERY

Price is still high, and no apparent Independent Security / Thatcham Testing... Exclamation

'Defender thefts are a major problem and, the industrial engineering on the Rat Trap may seem overkill, but as we point out: ‘This is a Victorian solution to a modern epidemic.’

No real detail provided on this 'industrial engineering' solution... Exclamation show us... Shocked

'Rat trap is available for all models of land rovers from 1948 to new.
Designed from the start as a self fit kit , we will (be) putting together
a nationwide fitting service soon'.

They may be on to something, but proof read your web page, take out the typos and really show
us the detail of how good this is...quite a few Defender owners understand engineering principles,
and I don't buy the I'm not going to tell you for security reasons, put it out there and prove to us
it's really been thought through.

Let see if they get this off the ground with good support material...Jury's out for me currently.

And I still reckon you [could disable it in a matter of minutes very easily if you knew how].

Admittedly it will slow the thieves down, and every layer helps, but not by much. For £500+ I would want something more effective.

(Editted to remove details of disabling theory)

surely you guys dont want the intrigate details of opertion (how and what it locks etc) posting on here for all to see. the less known about security devices the better. putting ideas on here about how to get around is just a how to Steal my truck manual..

if you want to know the details then surely give the guy a ring and ask him about it? My 1986 90 is currently on a full rebuild, with new chassis, Paint etc.. Very much a hybrid, TD5 Chassis, tub & bulkhead with a 200TDI and LT77 GB Painted in Stornoway Grey Smile 2 years off the road, but getting close to completion now

i in a way have to disagree with you here. its great to really dive into a sercurty product, how it works and how effective it is. its the cost vs effective question. and altho layers seems to be most effective way to securing our prides and joy. hiding away from the weaknesses is daft im my mind. its not really rocket sciene that removing a drive flange will render this product usless. evem if you park in difflock. then remove driveflange of each axles will again get around the rattrap. only time imho this prduct becomes more effective is if alloys with small centres where accese to flange bolts is not accessable or even wheels like mantras where wheel needs to be removed to remove centre cap. Confused Confused
