Blackwolf - could you ask the PR guy from LR to see if his engineering colleagues could shed any light on this?

That's the idea! I assume you've fitted a second nipple diametrically opposite in order to maintain the balance of the shaft? All you need now is a hole in the casing to enable a greasegun to be applied, either an open hole at the bottom or a tapped and plugged hole at the side.
Job's a good'un! |

Thanks for the 'assembled' photos - I can see what you mean, with the plastic dust cover on there would be no way to squirt any lube in, & although I take Danielles point on grease, I was working on the theory that some lube would be better than nothing and at least it might stop the dry dusty corrosion evident there and also on the ends of half shafts etc.
I need to do some planned maintenance in the spring, clutch, & shaft then! Cheers Keith |

Not strictly true, i did a clutch on a customers 2007 90 with 34k on the clock and when i pulled the transfer box off the gearbox it took the shaft with it |

Just as a final chapter, this shows how the shaft is re assembled with plastic cover, and the gearbox casing placed back on, there is no way to inspect this shaft unless you pull it out!
The kit i had from Land Rover had all the parts needed New shaft New splined shaft the correct grease Oil seal for the gear box New metal clip Plastic dust cover Foam dust cover Its not a bad job to do, if you feel you can take the transfer box off then you will be fine, in all honestly the tbox is a straight forward un bolt pull off job, its just the weight and shape of the thing that can make it tricky! The shaft i put the grease nipple in is the old shaft (i was just playing to see how well the grease nipple idea would work, Very well i must admit! so i will be doing this to my own 90 very soon, i used a pillar drill to drill through both sides for the nipple so it was all running "true" I would recommend drilling and tapping the alloy gear case using a drain bung the same as in the gear box filler (nice small size enough to get a grease gun into) also you dont want any water to go in to the hole as it will to untold damage!! All in all its a good job done, and if you have the time to do it well worth it, So you can then stop worrying about the dredded shaft ruining your day!! When i have done the mod on mine (re drilling tapping the case i will post phots for you all) Regards Ian Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

It is interesting that there is now a specific kit available for this job, since when I inspected mine (and bought the parts to replace it on the incorrect assumption that it would be on its last legs) the parts were only available individually. The price was about the same however.
Can you tell me what kind of grease is included in the kit? Also can you tell me the part number of the kit? I though it might be the IYX500050 number visible in the photos above, but this comes up as a Transfer Box Input Shaft O Ring Repair Kit and is priced at about £12, so can't be the coupling kit! |

This is not strictly a"kit" sold by Land Rover its simply the dealer selling everything you need to do this job properly
I know the manager at the Dealership well, and he has always been a big help to me regarding diagrams, parts, updates, and any information to do the job right. So instead of just supplying the shaft, he includes all the seals needed, various clips etc. that he knows i will need. The grease supplied is Weicon grease, sort of a silver colour copper slip. I will post up the pt numbers regarding all this in a little while. AND...........Talking to the guys at Land Rover, this affects ALL PUMA DEFENDERS!!!! There are no hard and fast facts about on which years suffer the most, they have seen plenty from all ages. He said it can happen to any defender, it really depends on how its been driven and treated. Heavy towers seemed to suffer the most! This is beyond helpful!
Waiting for my new clutch bits to arrive from the UK. Can show this to the local mechanic. Nothing like a visual record when having difficulties explaining things in the local lingo. Don't think we can find the same grease, but any grease will be better than no grease. Thanks a lot for posting this!!! Cheers, Stephan |

Thanks stephan,
I merely posted this just to help people surrounding the confusion and how to go about checking this important part, The puma seems to get a lot of "bad press" which I think is unfair! I own 2 series 1s they are troublesome too, as are any land rover product to be fair!!!! If people take the time to understand and fix the problems before it's too late they are no trouble at all. I understand that things can be annoying and fixing them can be problem, but good prevention is the key to owning a land rover, as I have found out (sometimes the hard way!!) I am not trying to preach to the masses! Just trying to help. Ian 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |
