How? The shaft is covered over with a black plastic collar held on with a cable tie, the only tell tale sign that it's dry is lots of red dust! 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

no I drilled a small hole and used a bore camera and could see bit of brown/red dust on the black collar , you always get red/brown dust when any spline wears as they don't wear when they greased , get the same on drive flanges , props, car drive shafts that aren't tight enough , but at least you can see them !!! not sure if drilling hole would weaken casing but only needed a very small hole for my bore camera , not something I would recommend anyone doing Last edited by munch90 on 25th Nov 2014 7:20am. I do not think that the rattling problem is the splined coupling. You can reuse yours adding MOS grease. It does not seem irremediably damaged. Discovery 5 td6 HSE Stornoway Gray Outback Engineering Limited Edition IID Pro MV License |

Ian,
Do you think it would be possible to drill a very small hole in the casing that would take a straw type oil applicator and spray some oil into the coupling without removal / disassembly? If so whilst you have one of these out cold you measure where to drill? Justa thought Cheers Keith |

You need to grease INSIDE the splines.
If you spry the grease from outside, it does not reach well into the splines and when you drive the car the centrifugal rotation forces expels the grease from the shaft. Discovery 5 td6 HSE Stornoway Gray Outback Engineering Limited Edition IID Pro MV License |

I thought that the rotation and vibration would draw the oil down the splines, I saw something on cooling on a turbine once and the hollow center of the shaft help cool it? Also if we could drop oil onto the top of the shaft at each service some would work its way in surely? Keith |

Mhmmm the oil would be centrifuged before entering,
a grooved/splined joint needs high performance grease, the oil is not enough. To be sure to do a good and definitive job you need to put grease in it. When a mechanic friend of mine did one of these last week, he packed the outer piece with grease, then hammered the "shaft" piece in, so it's totally full of grease, splines an' all.
His idea for a modification, was to fit two grease nipples opposite each other, say at 12 and 6 o'clock. then drill a hole through the side of the extension case big enough to fit the head of a grease gun through (and tap it so you can fit a bolt afterwards) at least you could give it a pump of grease now and again. Might be a pain getting it lined up with the nipple & hole though |

Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Here are some photos of how the shaft has a plastic shield around it when fitted back together, I can't see any way of inspecting, or lubricating them without physically taking them apart! Drilling holes in the side and spraying in grease would not cure this IMHO When it's all together again I will post a photo to show you can't see the splined coupling at all. I'm fitting a new coupling just as a matter of course, as they have had one fail recently if it were mine I would grease and replace, but as it's a customer requesting this I will fit new parts. 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

The idea of fitting a grease nipple to the side is actually a very good idea!
Why didn't land rover think of that?? With a little inspection plate to the side of the box. 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |
