Another one with worn splines!!
Just thought i would post these pictures of the 2010, 90 that came into work today for the dreaded "rattly gear box problem"

Clutch springs were shot, and the splines on the shaft very dry and starting to wear.

It had covered just 31,000 miles! Big Cry

BLIMEY!!!!

I think i would have lost faith in Land Rover after that little lot!!!!

Splines were as dry as a bone, why on earth they thought lubrication was not needed is beyond me?

Now im thinking should i drop the box in mine to see what they are like! although i have no noise or gear change issues, im thinking "if it aint broke" type of thing!!!

It doesn't take long to drop the transfer box to check and lube the splines and it'll give you peace of mind.

Okay, so I am aware that moving metal parts generally require some form of lubrication... Whistle

What I am failing to comprehend is why these bits have absolutely none?

Are they not checked/lubed as part of the normal servicing regime, or what... Shocked

Or am I just being a dipstick... Rolling Eyes

Earlier Puma's avoided this issue but 10 and 11 seem to be very prone.

The shaft is in the gearbox, the last time it saw the light of day is on the production line, so not really a service item, unless you remove and split the box to have a look,

Maybe i will leave it alone! Whistle

Get it done if you have a clutch change, that's what I did.

Mines a 57 and there was no wear on mine but I asked them to Moly grease it anyway.
Seems nice and smooth now, anyway but it would do with a new clutch and all sorts I've had done on it.
As I said it seems like 10 and 11 years seem the ones with the issues regarding this.

Probably!!!! Rolling Eyes

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, the person who owns this 90 has 2 others in his fleet of work trucks, one has been done 6 months ago, and the splines were pretty much gone!

This one is a bit slack but not too bad, i think im doing the other 90 next week, so will be interesting to compare all three, they are all 10 plates with around the same miles. 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Any external/early warning signs I should be looking out for Ian, or asking my dealer to check, I am still just inside their pre-loved warranty?... Shocked

This one was quite noisy, when i drove it in the workshop it sounded quite rattly, sounded like clutch plate springs, (which were shot) i didnt get to talk to the driver, i will try and get more info as to symptoms tomorrow and let you know!
