Hi guys
Sorry to bother you again with troubles but appear that my Defender have more gremlims than ussual 2 days ago I notice oil in the steering protection bar and checking more carefully I found a oil exhudate in the area of the intercooler showed in this picture (borrowed from Internet) Click image to enlarge Some pictures taken yesterday to illustrate: Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge I sent the pictures to my Indy and according to him, probably my turbo is leaking oil inside the intercooler The Defender have now almost 200,000 km. Turbo is working OK but according to him soon or later the oil will block the intercooler and should be check soon. Any other "less expensive" idea about what can be? I feel a little bit down Eduardo MY 2007 110 SW PUMA 2.4: Big Fog of 64' MY 1994 Jayco 1207 Folding camper: "El Tremendo" Click image to enlarge |

If the turbo seal was gone, the smoke screen from your exaust would be "quite" visible from many hundred meters away!
Check the steering box very carefully,on a buddy's (LHD)puma,it doesn't leak from the usual seals (to steering column or steering arm),it leaks from the front side of the box exactly over this crossmember! Generally oil vapour residues will be visible at the intercooler hoses as they age,no matter how tight the hose clamps are.. Clean the area and observe,no need to hurry.. EDIT I'just show your steering box in these pics,it doesn't leak but check the steering pump hoses (not shown in the pic) |

Is the oil a reddish colour? It could be from the power steering reservoir hose. I found an oil patch in the same place and it turned out to be a loose hose clip. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to us off. Richard |

If the turbo is leaking oil in to the inlet side , its not the worry of oil blocking the intercooler its the fact that if the turbo leaks enough oil for the engine to start running on its own oil then it will start revving then higher and higher and you wont be able to stop it
YOU NEED TO GET THE TURBO CHECKED BECAUSE IF IT IS LEAKING OIL IN TO INLET SIDE AT SOMETIME YOUR ENGINE WILL GO BANG !!!!! AND GET IT CHECKED SOON !!! but I have seen lots of intercoolers with oil in the bottom corners on the outside and always thought its where the oil sits in the bottom and effects the rubber seal between the core and the end tank that lets a bit of oil out under pressure , nearly all intercoolers will have a little oil in the bottom [/b][/u] |

As said some intercoolers sweat oil mist for years and run fine or the hose just lets a little oil thru.
Don`t forget check oil level, filters, hoses, breathers first. ect. If you really want to check the turbo, drop off the induction pipe to the turbo and feel for play on the turbine shaft. ( the same as when checking a wheel bearing). There will be a small amount, have a look in side the at the impeller blades ? Are they all the same and not mushroomed at the edges. Does the turbo turn smooth, no tight spots. Pull the shaft it`s self in and out there should be no movement. There will be a small amount of oil in there. OF COURSE DO THIS WITH THE ENGINE OFF.... Then a test with the engine running, This may log a fault code, be warned. You will need an assistant. Remove the induction pipe to the inlet manifold, get your self a piece of a4 white paper. Start engine, and hold the pipe to the manifold give the engine a few revs to clear pipe, oil always gathers at the joint. With your piece of paper held 8 inches or so from the pipe (turbo output to inlet manifold) Get your assistant to rev the engine to 2000 / 3000 rpm. If your sheet of white paper is now covered in black oil your turbo`s nackard. If you have the odd spot of oil it`s more than lightly ok. There will always be some oil carried over. This method checks the turbo under boost conditions ( granted not full boost but it`s a good indicator) Excuse the spelling I`am better with spanners and wires. |

Thnaks guys for the prompt answers.
In fact, as I can see today, the oil sweets from the bottom part of the intercooler and the oil level remains the same than when was filled (4,000 km ago) . Anyway the Turbo will be check during next week to see if need to be changed or not. Thanks again! Jeez...maybe also get your intercooler cleaned and ask them to pressure test it to see if there are any holes in the intercooler?

Up to the introduction of the TDCi engine there used to be a 4 year/48k mile flush of the intercooler.
As noted, check the condition and tightness of the hoses first, at your milage it is probably worth flushing the intercooler anyway. |

Well,
An update of this: Turbine shaft with play due the seal wear, so the oil is getting through the intercooler that have a small crack. The turbo will be replaced tomorrow and the intercooler will be repaired later on. Quite expensive business Eduardo MY 2007 110 SW PUMA 2.4: Big Fog of 64' MY 1994 Jayco 1207 Folding camper: "El Tremendo" Click image to enlarge |

I have an OE intercooler from my 2010 2.4 I am not using you can have. If you like I can post it to you. If your interested PM some details and I'll get a quote. In perfect order, removed from vehicle 12 months ago. To fit a larger much more expansive one with questionable results. My Defender and travels
