2011 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 USW Indus Silver

Track Rod Snap! (not the rod end)

I had a Track Rod snap on my Defender a month after it was out of its three year warranty! That's right, a track rod and not a rod end.

It was metal fatigue at the end of the threaded part of the rod.

It was a properly scary experience!

Is it worth a letter to LR with chassis numbers and pictures or will they just say sod off?

It had been service two weeks before and rods and ends checked!

And thoughts?

If its metal fatigue due to manufacturing fault i'm pretty sure LR would be interested. They obviously buy these parts and need to know about critical safety issues such as this. You might not be the only one.

Raise a thread in the Customer Relations forum here. Add a photo or two of the damaged ends so we can all see.

It can be very difficult/near impossible to see this damage before a catastrophic failure.

Obvious question, how have you been driving it?

Scary... I bet

if at speed or when cornering (under load), this could have been much worse.

If it is a metal fatigue fracture, then it is almost impossible to see with any kind of visual inspection,
before it lets go.

Normally only NDT (non destructive testing) with a trained 'operator' would stand a chance of seeing
this before full failure.

The quality of the steel and manufacturing process can vary between the batch production of components
so it is only by reporting this, that JLR can monitor failures and take appropriate action if required...
