Fitted Wheel spacers, now got the colly wobbles
Gents
Just fitted some 30mm spacers, and now have the dreaded 50/60 MPH wobble so I'm off to get the wheels balanced.
My question is: should I try and get the wheels balanced with the spacers still fitted ? ...I'll mark everything up so it all goes back the same way when I nail it all back together .
Seems to me that this would "Balance" the spacers as well .

Did you clean the hub faces and torque up the spacers or just do them up tight? I had an independent landy mechanic do mine and he was ultra careful fitting them and ive had no probs at all. Defender Puma 2.2 XS 90

Hello Mate
Eeerrrrmmmm.. With regard to the torque setting I sort of gave them a "good horsing" up with a breaker bar
Any idea of the correct setting?

Are your ones the ones that locate the wheels ?
Are they sitting on straight to the spacer ?
Might be worth whipping them off and reseating 👍 It's good to be back from the dark side

Yes make sure mating surfaces are clean and flat , but also if you have any play in top or bottom swivel joint or track rod end it will show up more with spacers and could give you wobble

I used spacers on my old defender for years and never had any problem , but I have always used 2 steering dampers anyway

I'd only ever buy hub centric spacers and always tighten them in a star pattern to the specified 130nm and check the tightness of the spacers at about 100 miles after initial fitting then refit the wheels then check the wheel nuts torque 100 miles later. It might be ott but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

leave the standard one as it is , but fit one on the bar behind the axle mounted of the diff , as there its more direct acting as its dead inline with the bar

My old 90 td5 ran with spacers and had a wheel wobble about 55 to 60 mph and you could accelerate through it and it disappeared
Got the wheels balanced and that sorted it
I'm a big fan of spacers and my Landy covered 60 k with them on and the wheel bearings gave no issues, I checked em every 6 months when greasing props etc between servicing

I would check the condition of your tyres for any uneven wear/stepped edges
Also check for bearing and swivel play
If the problem persists it's worth a look at the damper too, I've disconnected them for a test run to see if they changed the issue, obviously be careful as there'll be no damping effect whist doing this

I've tried a couple of sets of spacers; I love the look of them, but both sets gave me drastic wobbles.

They were both non-concentric type. I think the ones with the inner centralising "ring" are the better ones to go for.

Dynamic balancing beads will sort it out if you find nothing obvious and can't get the wheels balanced on the truck itself.
