Canada 2000 Defender 110 Td5 SW Bonatti Grey
Intercooler fan
2000 110 Td5. Had it for a couple months now, and previous owner mounted an electric fan infront of the intercooler.

I think it's overcooling the rad, as it's not running up to operating temp. Our weather is right around freezing last couple days, and I think I'm about to disconnect it.

Anyone have any info on this set up? Is it worth keeping?

If it's got ac then I might be the aircon fan - standard electric fan in front of aircon rad / intercooler / rad

Do you have a picture ?

Are you experiencing this with the ac off ?

Yes, it's got A/C. The fan stays on at all times, even with A/C off.

Sounds more like you've got an AC problem and that is causing fan to continually run.
Pull the AC fuse and see if it stops.

So it defiantly shouldn't be running with the A/C off? Hmm must be a sensor or switch issue.

No. Although I believe if the engine temp is very high the ECU can activate the fan to assist with cooling, but normally only on when AC switched on.

Hard to think of the engine ever getting hot... Gets warm, but hot is on the wish list.

I'll try pulling the A/C fuse and see what we get.

You'll find you have a logged fault for a temperature sensor. Clear it and all will return to normal Thumbs Up

landyandy is spot on about the AC fan running as part of the EMS overheating strategy on Defenders fitted with A/C. Have you carried out any diagnostic checks? I would be curious to know what the readings/live data are from the CHT sensor?

I believe the A/C fan should normally cut in when the ambient temperature is above 28 degrees C ( not very often in the uk). I hope someone hasn't wired the fan to run continuously to disguise an engine temperature issue ! 2005 Td5 90 XS

A/C fan si controled by the TD5 engine ECU. I was written here - check engine ECU for faults. When TD5 engine goes over temperature it started the A/C fan and will start it again every time engine is running.
With Nanocom you can also test the fan - it can energize it for a short time. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "BlufĂ­nek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

An overheating fault or a faulty sensor will cause the A/C Dan to run constantly. Clear the fault and/or replace the sensor should cure the issue. It wasn't me!

I've had this happen several times in the past with flat batteries or a jump start causing the temp sensor fault. Clear it and all returns to normal
