misfire at idle
Have recently bought an 04 TD5 70K miles...starts no problems...seems to go fine...(much better since I got the wheels balanced) just lately the fuel pump has raised its whine from wasp in a tin can to mosquito...not affecting starting or performance ( max speed comfortable speed is 70 ish) however I have noticed that if I freewheeel down my track (500 mts) the motor starts to missfire at idle......it picks up fine when I jab the throttle.

Am I paranoid and its just really all ok ?

Check oil level for diesel in the oil as it might be injector seals and washers going.

Oil in the ECU loom could cause the miss fire as well as the crank sensor but most likely the first if it is not under power.

Checked oil level..a tad high but no smell of diesel..possible overfil by previous owner...have got the spannerist changing the fuel filter and checking the fuel system before I get round to the injectors....it does not make the high whine when cold and on start up...it fires up instantly ..just when she gets warm...pitch increases..wondering if its air in system ?

One of the common places fro getting air in the fuel system is injector seals and washers. Cheap to do aswell.

Before you do anything just try putting a decent injector cleaner into the tank and run it. I had similar symptoms a few months ago on my 2004 Td5 so changed filter, checked FPR etc., and was about to go to town on the injectors but thought I'd give the cleaner a go. Worked straight away. Has run very sweetly since. You never know, no harm in trying.

If you are talking about a very slight misfire, when going from speed to idle suddenly, then I think it's normal for Td5's to do this. Mine did and it got to 167 thou miles before I sold it. Any body else noticed this? It did it in standard form and with two different tuners maps on it.

Mine does this when I have been driving steadily and stop at a red light, the engine will run rough at tickover when I'm at a standstill. It can be improved on mine by fitting a new MAF sensor and then gradually comes back as the sensor becomes dirty again.

Have purchased the seals (genuine most expensive bits of copper on earth)...am going to try some injector cleaner too befor I fit them..you nevewr know...the thing was undriveable over 50 ..was thinking polybush kit...suspension packages...blah blah...had the wheels balanced...different vehicle! Got to say though seals appear to be heading for a change.

Rubber seals as well as the copper ones?

It won't be the injector seals, as when they fail they allow air to travel backward through the fuel system, which can't happen whilst it's running. Failed injector seals give poor starting, and noisy pump before running problems.

I hope it is not the seals...Pump has begun to whine at higher decibel level than normal....it primes ok..she starts on the button gets rough ish at the high end of rev range (70-75mph) ...but never had a TD5 defender before (Disco 1 300TDI) so might be normal and I am used to quiet cabins..hence the fuel filter ..The sound when she is cold from the pump is 'normal' ....once we get going and warm..pump sounds like its increasing in revoloutions...higher pitched tone...no loss of power...so seals must be suspect? Motor has only done 70K

Thanks for all the suggestions BTW much appreciated
