Hi All,
Have had a consistent issue for a while now...LR haven't able to fix it. After driving for about 50kms (30mi), when I coast out of gear (clutch in or out, same result) it sound like the drivetrain has huge slack & makes that clunking sound generally heard before it stills. Happens from about 2000rpms downwards, and from about 40kph (25mph) to standstill. LR have adjusted the handbrake drum thingy's (first try), and recently replaced some input/output shaft (second try). It still however makes the sound. I'm on about 61kkms (38k miles). 2012 D130 2.2. Any help would be much appreciated. The loan Freelanders and Evoques are nice, but I want my Defender back! Thanks in advance. Mike |

does it do it if you slow down in neutral if it does it sounds like the symptom of the brake drum adjustment. To test the hand brake theory when it is doing it and you are slowing down in neutral very very gently apply the hand brake so it just drags (do not yank it on you may break something) if the noise stops it points to the hand brake or at least it was with mine. Alternatively wind the hand brake right off and see it the noise goes away. If the noise has gone away when in neutral but does it when in gear it would point more to an issue in the drive line, has it done it since new? DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

Will try the gentle application of handbrake - only recently started doing it.
Hopefully it's an adjustment issue...only happens when in neutral. How do I wind it off? Sounds like the best option, as I hardly use it anyway for daily stuff. |

In my opinion the approved adjustment procedure gives insufficient clearance and slack in the system. What I've done in the past to cure this problem is to adjust per manufacturers spec and then back off the adjuster on the drum to give 3 clicks on the lever to apply and 4 just achievable. Brake linings do have a porousity and even living in low lying and coastal areas with a heavy atmosphere will swell the linings and corrode the drum leading to grabbing and the inevitable drive line snatching.

If it only does it in neutral it is most probably just hand brake adjustment, as others have said they tend to do it more after a bit of a run, backing off the handbrake should cure it, mine was adjusted at its first service and has been fine ever since, there are several threads on here re the issue, good luck DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS, I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |
