Temperature gauge needs comms with ecu as does the glow plug circuit to vary glow rate duration
I ran my own wires from temp sender and reworked the glow plug wiring under the drivers seat to a Tdi relay system
Simple and reliable

FWIW, There's a company in the US who are claiming to have this sorted. The company is http://safarihp.com/

Their website is being revamped at the moment so no info there but there was a post on their Facebook page recently announcing the fact. There wasn't any pictures or any detail in the post other than 'we can now offer Puma dash upgrades to earlier cars' so I have no idea if it's any good or not or whether they're offering a magic box to solve the CANBUS issue!

That's interesting but in my opinion I've got a simple 300 Tdi and an equally simple gauge set up without forking out for an ecu
It would be interesting to see the cost of this device

Temperature on Tdci is monitored by the ecu before being relayed to the gauge
The glow plug system also uses ecu monitoring to determine temperature and therefore glow duration, when cold the glow plugs are continued after start up for a determined period
I assume the device deals with this and the other can bus features
