United Kingdom 1985 Defender 90 BMW M52 2.8i Petrol ST Keswick Green
Automatic Transmission Options
I am looking for some direction on a potential automatic transmission option with the current engine in my Defender. I have a 2286 CC Petrol engine in my 1985 D90, it is the original engine and still runs well. I did not explore looking into the automatic transmission options prior to leaving the UK if any for this engine. Just starting to look into this, and am open to buying it out of the UK, so would appreciate any guidance or suggested vendors I should make contact with.

Get a rover v8 and stick a ZF hp4-22 on it as used in the nas and 50th.

Have a gander at the ashcroft transmissions website.

I would second that. You need to drop a 3.5 or 3.9 V8 unit in there for two reasons.

Firstly you need some decent power and torque for an auto or they are stuggling to pull.

Secondly I think you will struggle to find an auto box and associated parts required fro your engine. It is not impossible, but auto boxes and parts for a V8 are plentiful.
