Agreed. I can't see it starting at over Ł31/32k but extras might push it up.

I reckon a jump of around ~5k for similar spec to current would be reasonable. Cheers, David

Isn't that what the Defenders done, thrived in the harshest conditions? It's done that because of their practical simplistic nature. I'd bet my bottom dollar that this will have more electronics than ever before, more to go wrong when you're out in the desert. To my mind they've gone too far with what they have now. I imagine the majority of Defender lovers will keep hold with what they have and this will appeal to a different market entirely.

Before too long you won't be able to tell the difference between a replacement Defender, a FreeLander, Evoque, Discovery and Range Rover, they all look the same.

Think I'm correct in saying that many Manufacturers have tried to produce a vehicle to rival the Defender and have failed so what makes Land Rover think they can produce something better?

Whilst i can understand the simple is best argument, I would have thought that modern vehicles will all have some form of electronic engine management systems to comply with ever increasing emission requirements - as such your stuck with them.

Done correctly, electronics devices are perfectly capable of surviving in harsh conditions for many years and as such should not be dismissed as unreliable. I suppose the key words are "done correctly".

Aren't Merc G Wagons full of electrickery (stand to be corrected on this !) and they seem to have a reputation as a reliable world eating bit of kit ?

The Defender will have electronics in the same way a Ford Fiesta does, OK the Fiesta isnt expected to drive through swamps and over frozen Tundra, but engineered correctly I dont see it as a problem.

Just my thoughts as a TD5 owner who has never had a 200TDi or earlier.....

I agree. The days of ECU-less cars are over. They can't really be sold anywhere.

Land cruisers, Nissan patrols, hiluxes, g wagens etc all are very electrical.

The hilux that TG took to the North Pole would have been a common rail diesel etc Cheers, David

Calm down, it's just Autocar doing their usual dreaming and mock ups in Photoshop.

To be honest, they've not really pushed the boat out imagining this one.

They've just taken the old shape and put an Evoque front on it.

Chances are, the front will have the new LR branding style, but don't get hung up on Autocar's paint by numbers, this isn't LR's design Craig Rogers

Not new news the T5 platform was called T5 as they intended to make 5 models on the production line.

Clearly the Evoque is monocoque and does not have a chassis so not sure why your man stated these facts Thumbs Up

When I was in Botswana/Zambia, the savannah and roads alike were dominated by 76,78, 80 and 100 series cruisers. All of which have common rain diesels, ECUs, TC, ABS etc Cheers, David

What proof do you need, when electronics go wrong they are generally more of a problem to fix I wouldn't want to be out in a desert if they were to go wrong would you? Why do you think the army liked the 300tdi unit?

I appreciate regulations get in the way etc. However these days everything is made to be complicated suppose they have to reason to inflate prices. Everything is designed to have a short life, everything is thrown away when finished with. Just ashame that's all.

I've got a 200tdi and it's brilliant, bullet proof what I call a proper engine. I'd have a brand new one like a shot if I could, it's taken me a lot to put an order in for a 2.2 still not sure if it's the correct decision but we'll see.

Classic example is there is no such thing called a bumper on a car now is there? It's all an integral part of the bodywork, cars are now fashion accessory items, practicalities go out of the window. I guess they call that progress Laughing

Hi all,
My first post on the forum, but it's been keeping me amused and informed for year or so.
I ve got a 110 on order for 2015, figuring it'll be my last chance to buy what I want.

Anyway, as this thread and the other say, the new defender will be based on a current platform. Certainly not Freelander/Evoque, so that leaves the aluminium monocoque FFRR/RRS platform that the next full size Disco will also be on.
It's also bound to come with the same service and repair bills as those models.

I loved the photoshopped white wheels and bfg's! Still not sure about the rest of it though.
