I think its more blue than white, that's why I think its a sensor as it seems to only do it when outside air temp is around 5 degrees or lower. Defender 110

i don't know much about pumas, but blue smoke usually indicates burning oil.
think ive read glow plugs can cause blue smoke on cold morning start ups My 109 thread my youtube channel |

It seems to be very common for Pumas to make smoke for a few seconds immediately after cold start. If everything else is OK, I wouldn't worry about it.
Mine's been doing it for over 150,000 miles and has never got any worse (it's never got better either)! |

Quite normal for the 2.4's, my 2009 110 did this on cold mornings.
The 2.2 does not seem to suffer from the same issue. Try 2 x Glowplug cycles before firing the starter, i.e.: Glowplugs on - wait for light out - ign off/on - Glowplug light goes out 2nd time- Starter. Any difference???

My 2011 2.4 is the same, on cold mornings loads of white clag. The colder the morning the worse the white smoke and stink.
It's just unburnt diesel, it clears after a few seconds on mine, done it from new and a Transit van down the road is just the same. Jonno |

This morning its very damp outside came out glow plug light on waited for it to go out engine turns but wont start, tried again glow plug light out, engine turns again wont start. I waited about 30 seconds tried again and it started, it as done the twice both on damp morning start ups, the rest of the day its started ok. Could it be a glow plug or do they all need changing my defender is 2008 with 30k on the clock.. Defender 110

The white smoke in the cold mornings is unburnt diesel. The EMS overfuels on cold temps to start the engine and as the engine warms up less fuel is used in the burn. The EMS uses the information received from the CHT sensor to govern the fuelling file as to how much fuel is needed to start and keep the engine running within pre programmed norms, basically as the engine warms up less fuel is needed and it is the CHT sensor which tells the EMS what the actual head temp is. Fuel going into the cylinder is controlled by the solenoids on the individual injector which is controlled by the EMS. Again this is easy checked with a DMM as the EMS applies current to the injector solenoid valves in 3 stages:
1. 18 amps 2. 8 amps 3. 4 amps HTH |

My old Td5 does this as well, I am learning more and more not to look at the little things, at one point i'd be taking it in for every sqeak and rattle and water/ oil leak. Unless it's serious and hampers everyday use of the vehicle, or is obviously damaging it. I don't bother, cos i'd be bankrupt trying to fix everything on mine It still doesn't break down/grind to a halt so I am happy. 2001 Td5 CSW (weekend and snow mobile) Plenty of lights, M/T tyres EGR delete, roofrack, swing away wheel carrier, snorkel.
