Gilarions Two year Defender big build finished

Part 1

Had some time on my hands today so I thought I would show you my Build... It has taken two years to get this Hand Built Defender finished, well I say finished like all Land Rovers its an on going project.

I wanted to build a Defender with a 200TDi engine as I had one that had been reconditioned. So I sourced a 1984 Defender 90with a petrol engine that was on its last legs with a rotten chassis and more dents than you could imagine, but all I needed was a V5 so it did not matter as to the vehicles condition, and it was cheap, the only part that is left of the 90 is the gear box tunnel, the rest has sadly gone into scrap metal with a few of its good parts being sold.

What started as a project to have a Defender that I could mainly use off road,, the build ended up almost taking over every bit of my spare time and almost emptying my bank balance, still I think it was worth it hope you agree.

I started with a galvanised chassis sourced from Marsland and with the help of Dave Lee's and his considerable knowledge I ended up with a rolling chassis with new axles, brakes etc. and with the engine fitted.

It was then off to Land Ranger in Stockport where with the help of Pete who runs that branch we assembled the body. Most of the body panels were new, some were sourced from almost new accident damaged Defenders and thanks to Martin of Wawick 4x4 for sourcing those panels for me and an almost new TD5 dash. The new puma doors I sourced from Keith Gott who gave me a very good deal on them fully dressed. All the panels were sprayed by Steve at Stockport Spray Booth.

All the looms and wiring are new.

All the parts used in the build are OEM no nasty Britparts. I cannot list all the parts used as it would take to long.

Nearly every nut bolt and screw used is stainless steel

It has been fully soundproofed by Noisekiller and the interior supplied by Exmoor.

I also fitted an Ali Sports full sized intercooler and Bilstein shocks.

Anyway enough words of the story of what I did, pictures speak louder than words

Part 2 to follow...

Ok before I post more photos of the build, here is the Finished product so to speak It took two years three months most of my spare time and blood sweat and tears to get it looking like this and there is still a little work to do on it. I think all the work has been worth it....

Latest editions have been a stainless steel DLR bumper and side bars and a new set of Alloys/

For anyone wondering what colour this is, the colour is Trident Green a solid colour that Land Rover used in the early eighties. I happened to have twenty litres of it that i bought ten years ago at auction. I was a uncertain if i should use the paint but when i enquired how much paint was I thought i would use the colour as I already had it to save a bit of money. Personally i think the colour works and its a bit unique as not many Defenders are sprayed this colour.

Is this the fuel filler and vent? so its a TD5> tub on a TDi chassis?

Yes its a TD5 tub on a 200TDi chassis, getting the bends right on that stainless steel pipe was a nightmare particularly from the filler neck, but the lads at http://www.topgearstockport.co.uk/ who make bespoke exhaust persevered and got it right.

Well done gilarion looks great, you are no doubt proud of BIG...

Always good to see a ground up rebuild,
only done it once, (not on a Defender),
you really know your vehicle when you're finished... Exclamation SKIP
