At work a couple of years ago we had government subsidied training on eco driving techniques from The Energy Saving Trust. There was some impressive improvements in fuel economy (up to 25%) in the before and after driving but the techniques that they taught were (for me and most of my co-workers) very, very hard on the vehicle as they taught you to use all the torque of the engine and drive along in the highest possible gear as soon as possible and stay in that gear even when the engine was labouring. I have always driven with mechanical sympathy for my vehicles and the mechanic in me could not bring myself to "abuse" the vehicle in this way regardless of the savings.I believe that any fuel saving using this driving style would be offset by increased repair bills on your vehicle. Reading the road ahead more was one of the better things that was taught as that had the bonus of making your driving safer as well as more fuel efficient but I could never bring myself to drive with the vehicle shuddering along at 800rpm in 6th gear at 30mph just to save a few extra mpg! My everyday driver is a 2003 Clio 1.5DCi with 171,000miles on it and it still manages to average 73mpg! Smile

very good economy Thumbs Up
not only do I try and save fuel (incase you hadn't noticed) but I also try to reduce brake pad wear....when approaching islands at the end of a fast / dual carriage way for example I use engine braking and sometimes turn the a/c on to increase engine braking Thumbs Up

yes I'm pleased with the mpg I'm getting, as I say it took a while to get my technique, just sticking it in the highest gear isn't the way to go, I rarely use 6th for instance unless I'm doing over 50 I use the torque app on a cheap android tablet that lives in the truck, but over 30 purely urban is pretty pleasing and yes engine braking, I never dip the clutch and coast because the engine then ticks over which uses fuel, albeit a small amount, just taking your foot off the pedal stops the fuel flow and you use none, I have a re map which I reckon helps, it increases torque mine is "farmer spec" so I don't have air con Crying or Very sad I've always watched my mpg since I've had a defender no idea why, I took a greater interest when I fitted a piggy back ecu chip to my old td5 and instantly got another 3-4 mpg so now without going bonkers I like to drive in a fuel efficient way, I have big tyres on my puma too so I probably show a lower mpg than I would with the smaller stock wheels and tyres

I change up at just below 2000, I have a re map from monster tuning, which I think helps, the bigger wheels make the mpg figures more accurate as it seems to make the speed and therefore mpg read spot on rather than optimistic with stock wheels, its not a case of just driving carefully there is a definite technique to getting good mpg, its more about the right gear for a given speed, it took me a while to suss it, letting the torque drag you along efficiently is the way to go, on the motorway I'd probably get high 20's but I wouldn't be doing 45...

My speedo is bang on with stock wheels.

someone somewhere asked about my mpg while towing so here's a few stats;

b'ham to Eash coast then towards Lincoln plus pottering around East coast - 346 miles (c 246 with heavy caravan).

took 61 ltrs to refill - so approx. 25.8 mpg.

Whilst admiring the fuel efficiency and endeavours therein.

I`am a little bit worried about people slip streaming trucks (if I read this right ). Having being rear ended twice by tail gaters it`s not much fun. On one occasion I was driving a 7.5 tonne truck, had to pull up quick due to a child slipping from her mothers hand thank fully I missed her ( she was 4 foot away from my front number plate).
Then the bang a car went right under my rear, he was removed on a spinal board......

It may be all well and good saving a few quid but if something were to fall of said truck or trailer you may not be able to react in time. And the stone chips.

The idea of engine braking sounds short sighed as we all know the weakness of the clutch springs, not mention the rest of the gearbox is a bit iffy, turning the air con on will do little as the compressor is cycled on and off under normal conditions.
The condenser fan will use little power as it`s already turning from the forced air flow as we know it takes a lot less to run a motor than to start it.

All this low rpm engine use may cause more long term harm than good, even if the high pressure pump holds together by running low on diesel I would not be happy pulling fuel from the base of my tank / filter. Excuse the spelling I`am better with spanners and wires.

This was my understanding of modern diesel engines and I drove according to help mpg.
I fitted an ultragauge recently, and whilst it isn't calibrated yet, it does show relative changes in mpg.
What confuses me is that the instantaneous mpg shoots up when I press the clutch pedal and the revs drop. It seems that it is more efficient to coast
Does anyone know how the ultragauge calculates fuel economy? http://defender90xs.blogspot.co.uk/

Not sure the scan gauge works but not very well from what you have said.......
Can't say 100% this is the same with all modern diesel engines but the golf we have - you can clearly hear the pump / injectors when coasting but not when decelerating in gear if that count for anything?

Quick update date....at 323 miles and half tank left Mr. Green

Not sure, but with it up about 38 Mr. Green

Will hopefully have enough pennies for a bigger intercooler, remap and decat which I hope may improve things further?

I need to drop my mate a note shortly too as I think he was struggling to make up in his c220 today Very Happy .....only for a few runs out of some islands up to c70mph.

Wow now that is finally impressive, over 21,000 miles without using any fuel whatsoever with the handbrake on! That'll be why the temperature is up. Think you've an issue with the trip meter though, best go investigate and start a thread forthwith?

with a thread like that you're clearly in good form Mal (at least I trust you are?).

Off Topic

things are going really well at the moment (although saying this is probably going to scupper things) so lets just see how long it lasts Laughing

Thumbs Up
