Won't be a refridgerant issue - it's likely to be the a/c clutch or temp sensors giving anomylous readings. Don't trust your car to KwikFit!

There are a few things to check. Is your compressor coming on? and is the compressor cycling (going on and off).
When the compressor is on the pipe coming from the bulkhead (behind ECU) should be cold. The compressor should cycle. If it just stays on then I would suspect your de-ice switch. Report back, Cheers Nick |

When it works it works normally but on the occasions it chooses not to the compressor isn't cutting in. My feeling is most likely one of the pressure or temperature sensors being faulty. It may even be over gassed but I can't see why and it wouldn't work the first time it's started on these 30C days if it was.
I wonder how much the ECU is involved in the a/c since the dealer service guy did mutter it could be related to earthing problems I've previously had that caused ECU related starting problems. They did say the electric fan in front of the radiator had jammed and thought they had cured the problem. Unfortunately it's another irritating intermittent fault that spoils an otherwise good vehicle. Could be time to read the riot act to the dealer again although they are much more helpful than when I bought my Td5 seven years ago. Michael |

The other thing to check is if your radiator restricted (mud?) is any way as the ECU will not start the aircon if the engine temp is too high.
Just to be sure when you say working normally you mean that the compressor is cycling? |

Radiator clean and compressor cycling when working. Perhaps I'll try and explain again the symptoms. Today we did an induction for our harvest workers visisting five farms with journeys between 1 and 12 miles and each time we stopped for typically five minutes when we got back in the a/c just blew ambient for a start but then kicked in a few miles/minutes up the road. All puzzling to me. Michael |

you could try another de-ice switch. You can get to the connector without removing the dash and connect a new switch. Hold the switch sensor on some ice and the compressor should cut out and then in air warmer then 3 degrees and it should cut in. Obviously dont let the compressor run for too long or things will freeze up.
The other option is that you have some water in your system that is freezing and blocking the expansion valve. Debris would also block the valve. |

Yes, lots when it chooses to come on. It seems not to want to work when the interior is hot. A couple of miles up the road with the windows open purging the hot air and away it goes for as longer journey as you like. But stop for say 5 or 10 minutes parked in the sun and a repeat performance - like waiting for your heater to come warm from a cold start but in reverse! With harvest/combining upon us it may have to wait to go to the dealers till the autumn. Michael |
