I went for the rear door hinges only because the OEM hinges pins were corroded and constantly weeped rust even with me stripping them down and coating them in corrosion block grease. The problem for me comes from the heavy use of road salt up here in the winter time which coats the rear of the Puma causing everything to corrode. These hinges looked good and for the money were worth the risk in seeing if they combat the weeping rusty hinges, already noticed the salt stockpiles and the wagons being prepped for the low temps, time will tell if they are up to the job.

I would be tempted by these if it was not for the obtrusive branding. I really wish suppliers would stop doing this, I drive a Land Rover not an ORP (or an Entreq or a ..... )

Brian,

Increasing the picture size to 400% top picture have you sealed the securing bolts or is the surface finish around the bolts already showing signs of some deterioration? If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

@Mal

When I removed the OEM hinges I used T cut to remove any etching from the paintwork. I then treated the bolt holes and then gave it a coat of carnauba wax. When I offered up the orm hinges they covered the original OEM hinges foot print. The orm hinges foot each got a coat of ac-50 corrosion block grease, as did each of the bolts. We'll the bolts got a very healthy covering as did the holes. What you are seeing is grease seepage which I neglected to completely remove.

Have to second that! And not just on Land Rover after market products, but on so many other things as well.

Thanks Brian,

Am leaning more towards a set each time the thread is revisited. Thumbs Up

Need to do something, it's a shame the stainless steel ones that used to be advertised on Smiling Hound's old website never came to fruition. There was loads of interest in the product itself but e-mail queries remained unanswered as did phone messages from many people.....if you can't deliver any service at the launch stage it's probably for the best it folded when it did.

To be honest I have never understood why Land Rover themselves have never come up with a better design for their door hinges. After all they have had seven decades to think about it. Seventy years ago it was OK I suppose to put a set of gate hinges on the back door, not so sure it cuts it nowadays on a vehicle that can cost upwards of over thirty grand.

Rolling with laughter

Isn't that part of the idiosyncrasy and perhaps attraction of purchasing a 'warts 'n' all vehicle? After all something must give it it's cult following and enthusiasm?......Gate hinges, poor finish and internal shower when it rains aside of course. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

The door hinges look good but at the price I am not 100% sure they would cover all of the OEM footprint. Fair enough I could make my own spacers but the picture shows them using the OEM spacers which are bigger than these hinges so not sure the difference would be visible in a bad way. The rear hinges are well made and definitely cover the OEM footprint plus the rear door does seem to open and close easier, placebo effect maybe??

I am wondering whether a set of OEM door hinges powder coated black would look just as good, providing they could be powder coated, anyone had this done?

As stated I did a lot of research before buying replacement hinges.....Some you need to look out for due to size....

Not cheap but did a little research....OX4X4 do some nice looking ones but on E-Bay state that as the footprint is slightly smaller than standard if your paintwork is faded you may be left with a tidemark, so didn't go for their door hinges (have gone for their bonnet ones though!)

In sourcing good OEM hinges here are a few cut and pastes from another site. TD5 ones seem the best but need a little work and galvanising to make them last....You could then have them whatever colour you wish.....Excuse the longevity of this post.....

Or knock the hinge pins out, wire brush them and get the hinges galvanised. Got a set of 4 hinges done for a fiver. Drill surplus galv out of hinge pin hole and fit new pins. With stainless bolts, job done, no more rust.

The galv idea sound good but is actually flawed in practice because you'll have to remove the layer of glav from the hinge where the two halves of the hinge rubs together. This metal-to-metal contact is what causes the wear in the hinges and is what would also compromise the galvanising process.

FWIW. Get yourself the later Td5 type hinges. These seem to resist rust better and have a nylon bush in the hinge to prevent the metal-to-metal contact. Try to get genuine LR hinges rather than aftermarket ones. The pattern hinges(S**tpart) we've been supplied in the past often have more slop in them than the knackered hinges we're looking to replace!

True, but a light kiss with a file is all it needs. Had my galved hinges for 5 years now and they haven't worn through this"contact patch" yet. My original hinges were scrap by the time they were 5 years old, worn to Censored , sagging and rusting. The rust tends to accelerate the wear on the contact patch. 5 years on the galv ones are good as new. I got brand new ones galved by the way. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!
