Smell it, no really, get a drip on your finger and smell it. Then see if it feels oily or not, does it diminish if you rub it between your fingers or does it still feel like a lubricant. Steve.
Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades. Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW. Reminds me of a few years ago waiting to get on the St Malo overnight ferry, gent next door knocked on the window and told me I had fluid dripping off the underside - reached under, dipped my finger in, smelled sweet, tasted sweet and oily, made the snap decision to travel and sort it out in France. Got on board and checked level of coolant, it was OK and pink, fluid underneath was blue.
My daughter them informed me she had knocked over her slush puppy iced drink in the rear seat footwell - I haven't been so happy that I had a sticky mess in the back seat since I last swerved to avoid a child! Keith |

Check the cap on the coolant tank. Some of them start to leak after a few years (at least on the Pumas). Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

On the flightline in Cyprus years ago waiting for the crew to turn up I was absolutely busting a gut for a pee so let one go by the starboard underwing fuel tank. Did chuckle when the pilot did his walkround, dipped his finger in it and gave it a sniff thinking it was aviation fuel.

Give that man a cigar! Having a look in the light of day it is definitely Antifreeze. It's not oily and theres too much of it too far forward to be anything else. Also I probably should have checked yesterday but the expansion tank was pretty much empty! Dead giveaway! Unfortunately it does look like a lot has escaped and has dripped all down the passenger side of the engine bay (a puddle under where the turbo is). I tried to find the source of the leak but couldn't see where it was coming from. Are there any common sources or areas I should check? Thanks |

There is a core plug in the cylinder head, in the middle of the exhaust manifold, that often leaks.

If it's 'oily' it's gearbox oil or power steering fluid.
If it's not 'oily' it's antifreeze, ![]() |
