ERG Removal
So !

Bought a Britpart ERG kit.

The ERG valve came off really easily and wasn't that mucky inside ! Oh well. The pipe to the intercooler was easy, a nice blue silicone one ooohhh sexy replaces the old one !

The vacuum pipes blocked off and the electrics to the ERG all sorted, great this is simples ! !

OK the other side . . . . . fek.

I could get the pipes off the heat exchanger no problem (its a 2004 TD5) but one of the bolts connecting the pipe to the manifold was A. difficult to get at and B. probably now rounded off due to my efforts. Looks like the exhaust manifold will have to come off to get at it !

My question is;

I have discounted the pipe for the heat exchanger but it is still connected to the exhaust manifold. As a temp fix I have then bolted the blanking plate onto the pipe from the manifold, where this would go into the heat exchanger. Its a good seal and I wondered if I could get by with the bodge for a while before I have to take the whole manifold off ?

Thanks

Duncan

Yes I think will be ok. The exhaust is effectively blocked off as it would be with kit, just further along the system.

Andy

Ps

Do yourself a favour. Stop buying Britpart stuff, it is poo

As long as there is no leak of exhaust gasses it should be ok indefinitely.

I removed the whole of the heat exchanger eventually and in so doing fixed a slow coolant leak which had eluded me for about 2 years!

I second what Andy says about Britpart.

I am learning about Britpart stuff !

I originally thought it was good but the wheel carrier (swing away) is a bit poo ! Cheap and half the price of the others but still poo.

The ERG valve issue is not Britpart it was more the fact that the bolt was seized and I f'k it !

Ah the joy of landrover ownership ! ! !

Cheers for advice Smile

How do you take the rest of the heat exchanger off ? Do I need to block up either end if I don't ?

Cheers again

I had already blanked the exhaust at the manifold, so only the coolant pipes were still connected. One of these comes from somewhere round the back of the block under the inlet manifold (fuel cooler or something, I forget), the other to the header. I simply replaced both of these with a new hose straight to the header, though I did need a reducer since 1 pipe is much bigger than the other.

This is on a Disco, not a Defender, but the principle is the same.

I only did it because I like simplicity and don't like having bits that aren't needed bolted on. It was an unexpected bonus that it fixed the slow leak (which I had always attributed to the threaded core plug under the exhaust manifold).

I left my heat exchanger in place. My thinking was/is a bit more cooling (possibly) can't be a bad thing. It wasn't me!

Regarding the manifold end cap bolts..... heat works, so, go for a nice 30 miles drive, then get home and try to undo them... you might find the heat from the exhaust itself is enough to shift it... also plenty of penetrating oil beforehand (might smoke a bit when you're driving mind)
