TD5 Swivel Seal Leaking Oil
Bit of a strange one to me this. But basically my TD5 has developed an oil leak from the bottom of the offside swivel. Now I have had this previously on older defenders and series vehicles which have oil filled swivels. However the TD5 swivels have no drain hole and afaik they are filled with CV type grease.

So the question is, where is the oil coming from, could it be leaking from the axle casing into the swivel housing? If so which seals would need changing?

Front axle will be being stripped and rebuilt soon anyway as it currently has a lot of backlash (suspected worn splines into diff.

Cheers,

Do you mean a properly wet sort of oil. Not a warm grease leak you get from the swivel seal being borked?

Yes there is indeed a seal to stop the Diff oil going into the CV. Some Trailers remove these to allow the Diff oil in, but there's plenty of arguments about this!

I believe the usual suspect is the one that's in the back of the Swivel ball.

Easy enough to change if you're going that far. Very easy to strip down, just make sure you get your pre-loads bob on on rebuild!

Cheers, it does seem like oil rather than warm grease as its a very distinct dribble and has started to leave drips on the driveway.

I am going to do a full front axle rebuild anyway. Just need to get a list together of all the seals etc I need.

Before you get too carried away just check for any play in the swivels, jack up the wheel and rock top to bottom and check for play at the swivel housing. Loose swivel bearings can allow some seepage of oil/grease out of the swivels.

Well after having a good look over the front axle last night. I can conclude it definitely requires overhaul! The offside swivel has a bit of play, as pointed out above, this is probably causing the oil/grease leak. Although the drive flanges are only 6months old (fitted when we bought the truck) the CV joints have ridiculous play in the splines.

More shocking is that the nearside CV joint is missing the shim and circlip and looks to have been previously welded onto presumably the old drive flange so is obviously also now ruined!

So looks like I need to get hold of those axle bits off taazzukcb and start building myself up another axle. Not the end of the world as I also have new front suspension and link arms to fit too. Might as well go the whole hog and replace the brake lines at the same time! Looks like an expensive month!
