Removing a cat on a 2011 Defender 110 2.4 Puma
Hi everyone.

I own a 110 and am bothered by the intermitent but persistent vibrations (metallic noises) that come out from the catalyser since I first purchased the car (brand new). Cannot count on a LR dealer as they refuse to acknowledge the problem (yes, the car is still under warranty).

My mechanic says that, apart from a small increment in emissions, no other problem will result from removing the internal parts of the cat. However, someone else has suggested me remove the whole cat box and replace it by a 63 mm diameter pipe, a common procedure, according to him.

How different can the outcome be if (i) the whole cat box is removed or (ii) just the internal parts of the cat (ceramics etc), ie, keeping the metallic outer? By "outcome", I mean reduction in performance, additional fuel consumption, change in noise, darker smoke etc.

Lastly, why so many people, according to one of my sources, remove the whole cat box? Is it all related to annoying vibrations, just like in my case, or they aim at another target?

Really appreciate your views on that.

I removed the internals, no issues whatsoever.

Do a search under 'decat' there is loads of threads listing all the benefits of decatting. Still one of the best and cheapest modifications you can do in my opinion.

reduce EGTs, decrease cabin heat soak, etc.

turbo also spools up a little bit quicker at low revs.

Hi guys:

Just to add that I'm simply trying to get rid of the irritating metal noise without having to buy a new and pricey cat. I want to keep the original characteristics of the car as much as possible: performance, noise level, smoke aspect etc as I'm not involved in any car tuning or the alike.

Yep, my mechanic used a long drill bit and broke up the internals into small pieces, which then fall out of the other side of the cat --

Bear in mind that it will an MOT failure to not have a cat, that said I will still remove mine Shocked I will replace the cat section at Mot time and again remove it just after!
