I've noticed that my transmission is noisy when stationary with my foot off the clutch, if i press the clutch its quiet and if i start to release the clutch in gear its quiet, when moving its not audible above normal noises. It appears I may have gearbox input bearing/gear noise, can anyone confirm if theirs are the same or if this is an early warning of a gearbox input shaft/bearing etc etc failure.
(ps only 12000 miles and never abused) thanks in advance DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS, I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy Last edited by LR90XS2011 on 15th Oct 2014 4:56am. Edited 2 times in total |

Hiya, I have exactly the same problem. Like you say not worth worrying about at the moment.
What point should I worry? Or will the clutch just "let go"? |

I was chatting to the local land rover specialist mechanic as mine is currently doing this.
He said that it can go either way, that he's known them rattle and clunk away for months or years even and keep going but also that recently local tree surgeon had the issue for a short time and one day it just let go completely whilst he was working. Luck of the draw i think, mines in Thursday for a new clutch as I'm on a 1500 mile round trip in a few weeks and can't afford to have it go in the middle of it. 'Accidentally' getting a sneaky remap/egr delete whilst its in so its not all bad! |

Hmm think I will send mine in, I have only had it a few days and to be honest did not notice it on the test drive.
Just hoping the garage will replace it under warranty! Thanks for the advice |

Mines done it since new (50,000 km) but it's not that loud - always keeping an eye on it though... Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

To be honest, the way I saw it was i'd have to pay out at some point in the future so may as well get it done and save it knackering at a really inconvenient time.

Well a quick update:-
contacted Peter at Landrover (previously Mike), took the Landy to Guy Salmon as requested for diagnostic, Guy Salmon agreed things were not as they should be including more driveline slop than normal. Next day got a call to say LR had agreed to pay for the investigation and repair. Landy is now booked in for the first week of October and I will let you know what they find I just like to say a Big thanks to Peter and am optimistic of a happy outcome. Further update, Landy dropped off at Guy Salmon (very nice show room and helpful staff) .
Going there a second time was enough to make me think I might want an Ewok to replace my BM. The work is planned in for Tuesday with an expected pick up day of Thursday, I was offered a Ewok or Freelander as a courtesy car but declined as I currently have no space for it on my drive and use the BM everyday anyway. I'm optimistic having read others posts that I will get back a much smoother, quieter and better driving vehicle, just hoping it does not get nicked or otherwise damaged whilst with them, and that the new clutch lasts longer than 13k DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS, I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

yesterday afternoon popped to Guy Salmon having been told the clutch was finished, was told they have fitted a new clutch plate, flywheel (why I don't know), pressure plate, slave cylinder/bearing (don't know why), also new front drive flanges and half shafts,(don't know if this includes CVs didn't see any of the bits so cant post photos but apparently this was where my transmission play was). Took it for a spin and it drove loads better and the play in the transmission has all but gone, the noise from the clutch area has also gone. just hoping this clutch lasts more than 13k. cant add anything more as I didn't see the parts or know why it needed any of the other clutch related bits other than the plate. When I get chance at the w/e I will have a look underneath and see if I can see anything (ie like if they took the transfer box off as requested) and give it a proper run and report on the differences. So far so good.
Once again thanks to LCR Mike@landrover (peter) on this website for agreeing that LR would pay for this work and all those whom offered advice. This has improved my faith in LR and I will now be seriously considering them again for my next big purchase (can I have a new DC100 to replace my BM please) Must also say my experience with Guy Salmon was much better than previous experiences with another well known local main dealer whom never took my concerns seriously and I will be using GS in the future DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS, I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

Good to know that the problem were solved (quite common indeed) I change mine 2 weeks ago due the same issue. Regarding the flywheel, tends to warp when the clutch fails and most of the times cannot be recovered. Well at the weekend I took it for a trip to Machynlleth, motorway, A roads and narrow country lanes and I can confirm that it is loads better, next to no transmission play compared to pre repair and after about 120 miles the clutch remains silent ran perfectly and seemed smoother and quieter than before, no oil leaks or other problems found so Guy Salmon Peter . Looking forward to many years of trouble free motoring DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,
