I'm interested in getting a set of these but I was wondering about driving on the continent.
When we bring a rhd vehicle over to the continent we have to put stickers on our headlights as they are sided. On the headlights you can see the area you need to block off. How does it work with these?

Hi Dan, short answer is no spot to put sticker on lens.

Long answer.

Law basically requires you not to dazzle oncoming traffic. In the old fashion glass lens filament bulb headlights the pattern of the light was control/directed by the lens. With filament bulbs the light direction is not so strongly controlled as with an LED headlight. In a LED headlight the pattern of the light is controlled by the reflector. When you dip a standard headlight you go from main beam beam, straight forward to a lowered beam aimed to the left or kerbside for RHD/LHT vehicles

LED headlights have a much sharper cut off of lights in comparison to standard filament bulbs. So on the continent when going to dip beam you will not dazzle oncoming traffic but you will be picking up the centre line rather then the kerbside.

Your vehicle would not pass a European MOT due to beam pattern being wrong however.

Don't think all you say here is correct Brendan, it is true that LED headlamp light spread has a much sharper cut off than halogen lights. But still, for trucks with LED headlamps when you are parked in front of a wall and have your LED low beam on, you clearly see that the cut off for us here in continental Europe who drive on the right side of the road, has a cut off which moves higher at the right side. So if we with our LED headlamps would drive in the UK where you drive on the wrong (sorry, left) side of the road, our low beam would dazzle oncoming traffic. And vice versa of course. Easy to do the test, go stand 30 meter in front of your truck with the LED low beam on, and move your head down to something like 1.5 meter above the ground, then move to the left and to the right, and you will see that at one of those sides (the side where oncoming traffice would approach you, you will get dazzled, and not just a little bit. That goes for the Speakers, the Nolden, and guess for the trucklites too. Otherwise there would be no LH drive and RH drive versions. I think this is not easy to solve, but the problem does exist.

if you wanted to put stickers on the lens , you could ask nicely ( and offer a drink or your next mot could be a failure Whistle )at your local mot station and they can help you fit them while its on the headlight tester as that has lines inside showing the kick up in the pattern , so you can place them right on the lens

I think stickers are not so easy with the Speakers or the Nolden, don't know about the trucklites. On both of the first two mentioned the light is emitted by pretty small diameter diodes, so difficult to properly put stickers in the place where you need it.

I will see if I can get a more definitive answer to the question. However I do know that a few of my contacts have dared to go away on their annual holidays! Confused


Have had a quick look for lens convertors for LED headllghts and can not readily find them. Now there are modern cars fitted with LED headlights from new so there must be a definitive answer out there somewhere. It might take a while to dig out the information.

Whilst with Defenders it would be possible to retrofit your original head lights what do you do with a modern vehicle fitted with LED head lamps from the factory?

Only 5 years ago or so nobody had ever heard of LED headlamp technology. The next engineering job in the pipeline will be adjustable LED beams, switchable from LH driving to RH driving and back... Cool
And thereafter we will have something else again which will send the LED technology to the waste paper basket as something from a bygone era.... Shocked
New technologies appear with ever increasing speed.

Whilst am trying to dig out some more definitive answers, as Defender owners we have the possibility of retrofitting our filament headlights and using lens convertors.

Now some more cars have LED headlights fitted from new. What do they do?

Whilst I am pretty sure I am correct there is no point in being dogmatic about it.

I have had a quick look at the Speaker, Nolden and Truck Lite website and can not find any mention of using a LED headlamp on the opposite side of the road.

I can not see any mention of deflectors for LED headlights by the manufacturers of the deflectors.

My gut feeling is that we are looking for a solution to a problem that may not exist.

So does anyone else have definite information about this subject? Preferably from a source which can be referenced to, either a manufacturers or legal site.

Have emailed some questions but am not expecting a quick response due to holidays.

Brendan, the problem exists of course. Just look at the light pattern emitted by my Speakers for right hand drive traffic and imagine if I would drive as is on left hand drive UK roads. Oncoming traffic won't like it I think.
