So what is the best bet?
Take the gears out and sandwich a blanking plate on the egr intake? Or Turn it off? The gasses in EGR are actually corrosive to the engine! Better MPG? Kevin. |

I would say you need to leave the gear in that reads the postion of the valve otherwise the mil light will come on
but maybe take gear out that drives the spindle , making sure the valve cant open and stay open you may find that the mil light will come on after a while as the air reading from maf sensor will not be as programmed in to ecu without the egr opening and closing as it should sometimes the mil light will take a good few miles to pick up a problem only guess work as never done it and it would be up to you how you do it !!! |

I think I have the same sound and problem as you, Dieselhead
. It comes irregularly. And only at low speed or when I go from running to idle. I'm not 100% sure that it is EGR. I have tuned the car and removed the EGR funktion with remap. You find a solution? I have order thise: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/120940252274 MY2011 Defender 110 |

For those without a remap I only know of one 100% proven method of reducing not stopping the pollution. I ran with this method for about four-five years with a different map until the EGR disable function became available.....
You started at the blank with the largest hole and ran with it for a week or two and gradually reduced until you got a MIL light and then went back to the previous blank that didn't illuminate the MIL light and left it at that. Each vehicle being different with air filter, RAI/Snorkel etc. different set ups ended up with invariably a different size orifice blank to keep the MIL light off. Even running with a blank for just a couple of weeks it was amazing how sooted up it became. No clean cycle on my map currently. If you don't have a remap with EGR closed you would get a MIL light with that sort of total blank.
If you have a remap with the EGR closed the MAF flow figures should be ignored and you won't get a MIL light with the P1100-P1103 codes normally associated with disconnection or flow rates sensed? Why would you wish to fit a blank if the EGR is closed anyway would be my question? If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! "why would you blank if its disabled" , really just as a precaution and help save the valve
blanking keeps the egr clean if you wanted to put back to standard , the blank goes on the inlet side of the egr so keeps the cr@p out of it the part that suffers with the cr@p is the side with exposed spindle and the spindle hole where the soot gets up in to gear housing if you get the one with slotted holes its only 5 mins to fit only possible problem I could see with egr disabled is that the egr cooler may get blocked , but they can be cleaned out by giving a blast out with a steam cleaner normally its not the splindle in the egr that get sticky with soot , its the soot pushing up in to the gear housing that causes them to play up , the clean cycle really only keeps the spindle clean , ive seen them complete packed solid with soot , I know this as ive taken them apart when we changed them , sometimes when there gone you can see soot around the metal plate that covers the gear coming out round the small bend over tags that hold the plate on I think the case of having the cleaning cycle still active when egr disabled during running is a two sided one , keep the cleaning cycle and it wears the spindle bush allowing soot into gear housing , or no cleaning cycle and the spindle gets sooted up blank it and no cleaning cycle could be a better option |
