puma gearchange clunking
2012 2.2 puma bought from dealer. test run showed severe clunking on gear change but presumed it was because I was used to 2.5. vehicle,it had done 9k miles, returned to dealer at 15k with same noise , obviously something was wrong. Dealer said he would try to improve it but couldn't cure it, which he did. contacted Landrover UK, a complete waste of time, went back to dealer who said he would if I wanted try and improve it some more but it was just a characteristic of that model. It is fitted with a ford transit engine and probably same gearbox I tried another two vehicles same engine and same problem. Any one had the same experience or have a solution , vehicle still under warranty until next July I know that I am not the only one who has experienced this but have been told that it is not a problem if I change gear slowly. The energy produced by this must be causing problems somewhere.

Very likely to be the clutch driven plate starting to fail (search the forum for info and how to test) but any backlash anywhere in the driveline will cause this. So it could be gearbox output adaptor shaft, transfer box, centre diff, propshaft ujs, axle diffs, or drive flanges, or a little bit of all.

They are very variable even straight from the factory or with a few miles under their belt. Properly sorted I found it should be able to change gear slightly quicker with the 2.2 as opposed to the 2.4, the former does not need quite so much knack in obtaining smooth changes. As BW explains there is a lot of potential for tiny bits of slack in various components to add up to a relatively fair amount of play which will cause a clunk if gearchange, throttle and and clutch control are more eurobox style that truck.

The 'they all do that sir' line is a common one amongst dealers, my advice is to take it to another one and see if they play the same card - if they do ask them for a test drive in another Defender. Steve.

Gee this frustrated me, that's complete BS LR are saying IMO. Mine clunked and banged from new, same garbage excuse from the dealers. Honestly is it fair to spend $60k and accept something that sounds like its falling apart.
Eventually the dealer suggested a gear box mount was broken and replaced it, but made little difference. It wasn't until I replaced the original p38 diff with a salisbury, that I discovered LR can make a defender that runs in silence.
There is no shortage of poorly set up and banging P38 rear diffs down here. I'm not suggesting a new diff, but definitely a look over by a specialised diff shop to check for pre tension for back lash. If LR won't wear it than it's a reasonably cheap option for the owner to cough up for.
I'd also be checking if you have pre 2010 fender, the status of that 2 pin front rover diff. You can do this through the fill hole. The has been a few unfortunate soles who have had the pins fall out and seize the diff. It surprises me that it seems to be a puma poor quality control issue that it hasn't produced a product recall. Imagine the front diff seizing at 60 mile.. Post 2010 have 4 pins, I wonder why. My Defender and travels

Nothing will cure it. I ended up with a developed technique of driving to improve slightly. I have just driven and am about to buy the 2.4...... No clunking.....thank god. So if people say the 2.2 is the one to go for i suggest otherwise!

They are not rally cars & not the best gearbox in the world if you ask me.

Alot depends on your clutch control. I find that when my other half drives it does clunk as she is not use to the new clutch I have fitted. When I drive it its fine

As someone told me years ago when I drove there vehical. Dont **** with the clutch & the clutch wont **** Very Happy Chris

Thanks for this comment, just checked my front diff, on my 10reg 2.4 Tdci dcpu, and it's a very very knackered two pin type. You can even see the pin falling, each time you rotate it.

Next question. Do I bother with warranty Question

It will cost about £800 recon, over 1k new. I know I've been there, twice!

Surely you're out of warranty on a 10 plate (or is it the extended warranty)?

LR will no longer supply a single pin (two gear) diff like your knackered one, so if it is covered by warranty you should get the latest 2 pin (four gear) diff as a replacement. If not covered by warranty, I suggest buying one from Ashcroft Transmissions since it will be far cheaper than LR and will be properly set up. My front diff failed on my 07 (and yes, it is exciting when the diff locks up completely at 50mph), and the outright purchase of a build-up Ashcroft ATB with HD ring and pinion, including delivery was more than £100 less than an exchange recon 4-gear diff from LR. It was also built and delivered within 48 hours, when LR was quoting 2 weeks.

When I got a replacement diff for my mates 110 from L/R it cost arround £500 if I remember

Must have been recon from them Chris

Have extended warranty, but have fitted a KAM LSD that I had in the garage. Better than giving more money to Ashcrofts for Britpart quality. Thumbs Up

It now drives better than any defender I've ever driven. All new fully synthetic oils (thanks oilman Bow down Bow down ). New front diff, and new fuel filter. The gearbox oil was a pooy red colour, so not sure was it had in it before. The old fuel filter had solids in it, water, and sorts of other stuff.

It's now a different drive. Best ever.

that was a stroke of fortune, well done.

Hey does anyone know where LR get their diffs set up. I know they place them in the vehicle at Solihull, but are they constructed in the UK, Poland, Check or wherever LR source parts from. Puma diff issues IMO are a direct link with accountants, profits, and market demands. The Defender is expansive enough, so parts have to be made somewhere to keep it somewhat viable. I'd imaging warranty may be viable. It's a know problem, and a dam unsafe one at that. LR will suggest abuse, and it's not worth taking it through courts. Depends how honourable your dealer is perhaps.

Lastly Ashcroft, though you guys like them. They are highly regarded down here, along with Hi Tuff which is the remains of Maxi Drive. Are things changing in the Ashcroft camp? My Defender and travels

Massive thanks to you newhue, I never thought about looking in the filler hole to assess diff. Was going to do a service today, but read your post, and thought I'd do a diff filler hole check whilst servicing. I knew I'd gained some slack and am pleased to sorted it so easily.

I've got extended warranty, as brought from Land Rover, but had the KAM diff in stock so fit and forget.

Front diff's have been a problem before, hence LR changing to four pin at 2010. I was always unsure what I had as it is a 10 reg.
