The only recalls to date is the sump on an 07 some others have had a recall on the flange in the hand brake drum....but that was on late 07/08
Sonic wheel carrier is about the best you will get ... The known issues weaknesses you should be aware of is the clutch...but my last one seems fine Ask you mate to get all the service and warranty records of L/R they will print them out for him NEVER TAKE LIFE SERIOUSLY. Thanks for the advice everyone. Is there an easy way visually to tell the revised sump from the first type?
If the clutch and/or vac pump needs changing, is it likely that they would be done FOC despite the waranty period having expired? I guess if they were recalls they would, but clearly they are not actual recalls. What was the issue with the handbrake drum flange? The Sonic wheel carrier looks the business! I like the way that is attaches only to the rear crossmember, and not the body. I presume that the gas strut holds it open/closed. Can it phsyically be locked (ie padlock type locked) in the shut position to prevent the tailgate being opened? Thanks for all your help and advice! If I do buy the vehicle (which looks likely at the moment provide Mr Bank Manager doesn't object) I will post some pics in due course. |

You don't need to worry about any of the recalls. If you take it to a LR dealer, they will check all the recalls anyway.
The sump has a chunk out of it (to stop it hitting the diff case), the handbrake was a leaking transfer box seal that rendered the brake less efficient (cue sarcastic remarks about how rubbish they are anyway), the engine gets re-mapped (to address loss of power). Those are the recall items but LR will flag those to you automatically. The additional one to check are whether it is still running the original vac pump. If so, expect it to fail at some stage - it doesn't stop the vehicle but makes a mess. Some Defenders have had issues with gearboxes and there was an inherent weakness in the original clutch. That said, mine is still going and that's an '07. One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS + New Defender 110 First Edition |

The strut holds the carrier open and helps with opening - Defender wheels/tyres are heavy. The carrier can be locked with a padlock. Bob |

Is there a way to tell an original vac pump from a later (double seal?) pump - other than the former spewing oil under the bonnet?

B/W The latest one i had fitted was number 30 G 09 written on the pump that was in September 09 hope this helps NEVER TAKE LIFE SERIOUSLY. NOBODY GETS OUT ALIVE ANYWAY

There were a few other recalls.
One that springs to mind is the brake line and heat shield and another service action propshaft grease nipples Mike |
