When he 'needs' the RAI he can block the new intake. For everyday driving the new intake provides the air. |

Using the heater blank on the wing sounds a discreet and viable option perhaps? It could possibly be used in conjunction with a snow cowl. Either way I am inclined to agree that fitting a second auxilliary larger diameter inlet would negate the necessity or requirement for a RAI at all. Using the blank heater inlet is also above the recommended wading height anyway so strengthens the case for binning the second RAI completely. Drastic measures and balls the size of watermelons Matt. I take my hat off to you.

True enough, but if there's no waterproofing of the system elsewhere, what was the benefit of the RAI in the first place? |

None whatsoever! A raised air intake is not a snorkel unless it's been thoroughly sealed correctly! Common mistake. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Okay - I'll try to make this as clear as possible...
1) I want to refit the RAI to avoid dust and snow. 2) The RAI restricts air flow 3) I have increased air flow for hot/fair-weather use by adding an intake 4) I realise this negates the point of having an RAI while the extra intake is open 5) but 4) doesn't matter under normal use and I can leave the RAI fitted for when I need it 6) When I need the RAI to keep things clean under dusty/snowy/ really wet (not wading) conditions, then I just block the auxiliary intake off with a rubber plug (just ordered the rubber). Then I can pretend I just have an RAI. Unfortunately, there is very little room under a LHD A/C Puma bonnet. Big tubes just don't fit along the normal intake path and there's no room to feed them over the top - this would have been my first choice. Just needed to clarify the concept Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... I like the concept and sounds like a good idea .. the way you've done it looks good too.
However, I don't want to drill a hole in the wing .. also have a good change of messing it up, so was wondering if the Nakatanenga solution would do the same thing for me. I just want to be able to increase the air flow by utilising the heater vent on the top of the wing and the standard air intake on the side. (I don't have a RAI .. nor have the need for one in my circumstances.) 2008 Defender 110 XS SW - M57N2 / 6HP28X |

Exactly what i looking at yesterday, Td5 rhd abs+clutch+steering = not much room i am thinking of two 70mm pipes one from the standard intake and one from the blanked wing top panel. ZeDefender brave man Range Rover p38 4.6 99 lpg(gone ) |

Well, it's been 33 degrees here and after a nice quick run on the motorway with the RAI fitted, everything is working just fine. No additional noise from the new intake and definitely no air restriction even under significant load (up hills at 150 km/h).
Just a couple more pics with the RAI (sealed well enough for now) - the second photo shows just how small the intake area is Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge After we've had some serious rain I'll hook the air filter out and have a look inside... Ahem,.... Could not stop myself You never actually own a Defender. I have thought about adding a extra intake
but don't really want to cut hole in bodywork , maybe will make something for blanked heater intake ( rhd ) and won't be fitting a snow cover thing ( each to there own etc but don't like the look of them ) would make a baffled box with a drain to fit under the wing on the heater intake |

If only you had one my size The pipe is 80mm and comes from Ramair: http://ramair-filters.co.uk/ducting-automo...d-cap.html The end piece is loose so I "moulded" a mesh over it and glued the pipe over that (stretched quite nicely) Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
