A guess that it was Russian rebels. If so, Russia (Putin) is now beginning to realise that flexing your muscles often isn't a good idea. Some actions have unforeseen consequences, and his silly lack of judgement is coming home to roost. It was never going to work out good for Russia. Now left.

According to the news the missile used was not the run of the mill back of a Toyota job as they don't really have the legs to get high enough for an airliner, the implications being it was a more government big military supplied device but as to who's it was and who launched it I doubt we'll ever know. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

It was a BUK surface to air missile system. All three sides have them, but only the rebels had one in that area and in the morning claimed on the Internet yesterday that they had shot down a Ukrainian military cargo plane.
They now deny it. The Russians would be able to identify passenger planes, but the equipment they have clearly given the rebels is dangerous in the wrong hands, especially a bunch of untrained jumped up angry separatists. The biggest post-crash worry now are reports that rebels are to send the black box to Russia for investigation, as this will result in a cataclysmic whitewash with the blame falling unjustly on Ukraine. 1998 110 300Tdi White Hard Top |

I don't think even the Russians would be stupid enough to try and make out that they know it was the Ukraine. I think I'm right in saying that all the black box will do is confirm a catastrophic end. The plane would have to be virtually rebuilt to show what downed it. Even then, who fired the missile? The subject of this thread is 'Who shot it down?' If you assess what's going on there, and you had to make a best-guess, then the crazy rebels look most likely. Lots of talk in the papers this morning, Lambert - one comment says that a 'Russian-Rebel' radio chat was intercepted just before the plane came down, indicating it was indeed them. IF that is true then it is quite clear. And another says that the plane was only 1,000 feet above a no-fly zone. The pilot may of thought he was out of range, but as Interlet says, it's a foregone conclusion that Russia have equipped the rebels with some advanced stuff - and better than normal surface-to-air missiles. Now left.

I read their comms transcripts yesterday afternoon (as did half the world before they were taken down), and I think it's going to be pretty difficult to convince anyone it wasn't them. What worries me, is that the FDR/CVR have alledgedly been recovered and sent to Russia for analysis. It's a pretty safe bet that if that throws up anything that points the finger in their direction, we'll never hear about it. Not exactly an independant inquiry. |

Actually, Putin today in a state message has, to paraphrase, said: "This would not have happened if there was no conflict; the responsibility for this must be on the country in which the conflict is happening." My understanding is that Ukrainian forces simply do not have any of these S.A.M. systems in the area, and the ones which they do have, have not been readied for combat simply because the rebels don't have any aircraft. The only people who have been doing any firing into the sky from the ground are the rebels. It was an accident, I don't doubt, but it was effectively irresponsible manslaughter, which will now become a buck passing football between Russia and its rebel allies, and Ukraine. 1998 110 300Tdi White Hard Top |

Russia Today quote the Russian Defense Ministry saying "Ukraine had a Buk anti-aircraft battery in the region and the radar was operational", they suggest a missile could have been fired (from the Ukraines) from another site. We live in "interesting times", as they say . Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.
