Route 66
I am lucky enough to be on a road trip driving Route 66 in Set/Oct with a couple of detours to Monument Valley, Grand Canyon and Las Vegas, although sadly in a Jeep and not a Defender. The route from Chicago to Los Angeles is littered with the weird and wonderful and I was just wondering if any of the forum members have any 'not to be missed' sights that I should take on board now that I am finalising plans

Just watch Billy Connolly's documentary of Route 66 for some inspiration. Great sense of humor he has, too. Enjoyed every episode. Have fun in your Jeep.

Just make sure you're driving it in a sixties era Corvette. Before you go, Google the TV Series "Route 66", listen to the Nelson Riddle theme song, watch Martin Milner, as the lead character Tod Stiles, and you'll be "in the zone".

We did the 'canyon lands' a couple of years ago and loved Bryce canyon ... 12/10!! it was better than Grand canyon for us.
we also did Zyon canyon, canyon dechay and several others in that area .. you'll love it !!
take lots of pictures - especially in the evening as the sun goes down as the light is amazing

enjoy!! Poppy - TDCI (Puma) 110XS 2.2 - Camper conversion - see the build here - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56530.html

Did part of the route many years ago.

One of the things I found interesting were the Indian dwellings in the caves on the cliff faces. If I can find the details I will post them on here. Not far off 66 but well worth a look.

England
Just came back from the states.

Two week road trip. did 2500 miles in a Toyota sienna 3.5 v6 auto at 19 mpg. They have some big 4x4 / pick ups their.
Mentioned land rovers and got laughed at " to small and no power said the man with the f 450 pick up ".

Started off in vegas, on to salt lake city (Mormon town) so beer mostly 3.2 % shops closed on sunday.
Then on to Yellowstone park and stayed in the old faithful lodge, expensive but nice. The geysers are a must see.
Did the grand canyon, sunsets are brill. Then brice canyon, take the bus tour round it it`s free and you see more. Then zion park. Stayed in some log cabins at jackobs lake very nice.
On the way back went round the hoover dam, it`s big and hot.

Then back to vegas for a few days, it`s a mad place.

Take plenty of music the American radio is weird if you go thru the rockys it drops off a lot. We missed the world cup final. The tv is rubbish, ever heard of transvaginal mesh, you will soon.

The people were very nice they love the queen !! They have some fantastic roads but the signs are small.
We really needed more time and tried to cram to much in.
Any motel 6 will give good clean cheap overnight logding. or try the Nevada inn for the breaking bad experience. Laughing

What amazed me was the stark difference between the rich and the poor, once your out of the citys or go from the centre of salt lake city to the out skirts. The food lines begin, you don`t see that in the uk.

Have a good trip and take plenty of water.... Excuse the spelling I`am better with spanners and wires.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions, Bryce Canyon in particular looks fantastic on the web and just the sort of place we love visiting especially if it beats the Grand Canyon which we thought was spectacular and exceeded all our expectations, however, I am already doing 2 (1 three day and 1 four day) detours to Monument Valley and Las Vegas (My 21 year old son is coming and he was too young to gamble last time we visited so he has twisted my arm) and need to try and stick closer to the remnants of the old 66. I see I could go from Monument Valley to Bryce Canyon and across to Vegas, however, I want to go South and not miss the section Flagstaff to Needles where the 66 is still well preserved so look to work our way there on a future visit
