Adseybear - Not resolved yet, but does it now almost every start up from cold. Tried spinning the turbo by hand to check for ‘stickiness’ seems OK but it is a bit hard to tell. The turbo can be seen spinning when started with the intake hose off.
Starts fine and ticks over without smoke, drive away at light throttle then white / white / grey smoke and engine vibrates as though it is missing on at least 1 cylinder. Runs like that for about a mile until the next major junction which usually needs more urgency to pull out into flowing traffic. Harder on the throttle, more white smoke, then misfire will stop, cloud of black smoke, then it will run fine until next cold start.
Bit long winded but anything like your symptoms?

BAS – Pete, thanks, will check fuel filter.

Next step? I’m going to leave with Ian at IRB for a while and see what he can find wrong with it. Series 3 88" Pick Up. Now gone.

When you park the car tonight remove the header tank cap. Leave it overnight with the cap off, in the morning replace the cap and see if the problem still happens.

I wonder if the pressure in the system is forcing water in the cylinders ove rnight and its that water burning off on a cold start pssibily indicating a head gasket problem ?

Pete, tried what you suggested and left the header tank cap off, there was considerably less smoke this morning. I will keep repeating cap on – cap off over the next few days and see if the change is repeatable or if it was a coincidence. Many thanks, Bob Series 3 88" Pick Up. Now gone.

Hi

Hopefully the results will be the same over thje next few days, if so its looking like it could be a slightly weeping head gasket putting small ammounts water in the cylinder overnight Sad
