Running rough after a remap.
Hello all, usually more a reader than writer, you guys seem to have most things covered before I can hit the keyboard.
Does anyone else experience rough running and grey smoke from exhaust following a remap?
I had my TD5 remapped last year and its taken a while to realize exactly when it happens, and look at possibilities such as injectors and injector harness.
It starts and runs fine from cold up to full temperature, performance is much better when I want to use it. But, when restarted after engine temperature has fallen into the blue band on the temperature gauge it runs rough, similar to a cylinder not firing, and gives out a fair amount of grey smoke. As soon as temperature is above the blue band it will run fine and stop smoking. Annoying when doing short stop start trips.
Does the mapping relate to engine temperature other than cold start? Is there a switch point set by the temperature? Does it happen on Puma remaps?

Can't see it being connected to a re-map.

Could be a head gasket?? [among various other possibilities]

Who did the re-map last year?

As you're in Bromsgrove, You could do yourself a favour and take to a renown specialist .. IRB Developments, link below Thumbs Up Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant.

Thanks Dave-H, hadnt thought about head gasket, oil and water levels all stay OK.
Starts and runs up to temp no problem, just when restarting after the engine has cooled down but not fully cold. Any clues on checking if head gasket? Series 3 88" Pick Up. Now gone.

Could be an air flow meter fault too, best thing to do is get it plugged into diagnostic kit and get the fault codes/live data checked Thumbs Up

Sorry for late reply, air flow meter was replaced about a year ago with a genuine LR one, but I'll get it checked.

Who did the map? Bad maps can cause all manner of issues. Either way why don't you ask the tuner?

Been elusive to contact, doesnt return calls etc. Its been a while since it was done and Ive been living with it. I think the fueling at low but not cold temperatures is not correct and 1 or 2 cylinders are not firing until engine has warmed up a bit more. Or maybe heater plugs, I intend to check those at the weekend. I probably need to get it sorted by BAS or Alive, it just that they are quite a way from where I live. It seems that no one else has had this problem so I guess its a one off. Series 3 88" Pick Up. Now gone.

If you can get hold of someone with a nanocom or similar, then copy your existing tune (unless it's been locked), then upload a standard tune (nanocom software can create all the factory tunes), and see if the problem goes away.

As elusive as you may be to perhaps reveal who did the map can one assume it wasn't by one of the reputable suppliers?

I used to have an Autologic map that eventually due to gremlins and further upgrades of vehicle began to give my truck running issues.

Rather than try to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear you may well have to bite the bullet, bin it and get a decent one. I had to in the end.

Alternatively 'How does it run if you revert it back to standard?' would be my next question? That way you can determine if it is indeed a map issue. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

I have a good idea who you're talking about. Can you not send pete your ecu to get it fixed, I know he does this regularly for oversea customers.

Thanks for the advice guys, I like the suggestion of getting a standard map back in to try, just got to find someone who has a Nanocom. Just tried the glow plugs with a cold engine, not showing any current on a clamp ammeter on 3 of the 4 I could get to. Took the relay out that seems all OK.
Is there a temperature above which the glow plugs are not turned on by the ecu?

you should be able to hear the glow plug relay. even in hot weather like over 30 deg C, the glow plugs are still energised as i can hear the relay click to turn off like after 7 seconds.

the glow plug lamp and the glow plug relay do not seem to tally. so after the lamp goes out, it's a few more seconds before the relay clicks. From the land of the most expensive land rover defenders on planet earth. At �125k for a XS 110 csw and you get to own it only for 10yrs! Please find me a good reason to stay on this island.

Ian (Porny) at IRB kindly offered to copy in the standard map, and removed and checked the glow plugs while I was there all OK. Next morning still rough and smoking until warmed up a bit. So its not the remap then, just coincidence it started around the same time. Ian thought the turbo may be a bit sticky and not running up until warmed up some. So, more checking to do. Series 3 88" Pick Up. Now gone.
