Well just got back from 7 nights camping with the wife and 1/4yr olds and what an amazing holiday, Weather was superb after a forecast of heavy rain all week and just going anyway it well paid off and the weather turned out to be a scorcher almost every day. A few photos below-

Day 2 - up to Gairloch via the coast road along past Shieldaig, very twisty up and down single track with lovely views

We loved Gairloch so much we extended our stay an extra night and cancelled Glenbrittle in Skye (maybe do that next time with a Cuillins walk), day 4 headed up to Uig in Skye, on recommendation of a few members here had a quick stop in Plockton for a looky, was a really picturesque little village and weird seeing palm trees in Scotland!

Took the ferry across to Tarbert at 9.30am
Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge When we got to Tarbert we took a quick drive up to Stornoway (only 45mins or so) stocked up on munchies and headed up to a place a friend from Lewis recommended (Bosta Beach at the top of Great Bernera), it was absolutely lovely and i dont think these photos do it justice - it didnt seems to be as packed with the turistas either! - intention was to stay here overnight but we couldnt find a pitch really good enough for our large family tent that was flat etc for the kids sleeping and also you cant get all the way down to the beach in the car so need to lug your gear down there so we ended up back in Stornoway campsite for the night which was fine - nice facilities and good location for amenities. i would seriously consider camping here if you can though in Bosta. Next day we decided to go up to the top of lewis (the Butt of Lewis as its called )
just before the butt we found a little empty beach with a convenient slipway down to the sand - couldn't resist the temptation to have a play Click image to enlarge truck looking sexy with some dirt in the tyres! then we decided to just roam a bit down the west coast and picked an island called scarp and headed towards it, when we got there after lots of cool roads we found a really nice beach called Hashinish and on the other side of the beach some absolutely amazing nice grassy slopes into the sea looking out to Scarp - for me this was the most amazing sight from the whole trip and again the photos dont do this place any justice..it was jawdroppingly beautiful
the beach (scarp is other side of this to the right of the photo Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge we would of camped here but there was a tour bus full of college kids already in the best spots so we decided to move on - ending up with a trip to Tarbert to find a close campsite and the nearest one Minch View looked like a bumpy back garden and they couldnt take card and we had no cash, the nearest 1 cash machine in Tarbert was broken and it was getting late so we powered back up to Stornoway and luckily managed to grab a family hotel room with the plan to go back to Harris the next morning with some cash and a fresh start!. |

Last day on Harris before the ferry back home we wanted to see the west coast and the beaches i heard so much about, they did not disappoint

Click image to enlarge This morning up at 5am for the 7.30am ferry and back to Aberdeen, long drive but an amazing week away and will definitely be back. Lessons learned West is Best!! Carry cash in these places as cash machines a few and far between - even when the places will take card they usually carryout the process as if it is a strange black magic
My first camping expedition in the Defender and also first camping for the Kids...the defender was awesome and was surprised by how well the kids coped, they absolutely loved it- even the 1yr old, just bought her a toy 'Heilan Coo!' and she was good as gold. I need to get a Kayak! |
