"Don't panic Mr Mannering!" Fundamentally I think therein lies your problem. Where's the other 8 volts plus gone? Big Steve's suggestion is a good starting point! even if the immob is set to off and the alarm is disabled, there's still some handshake between the ECU and the 10AS.
There's still the code and if there's an attempt to swap ECU or 10AS it can suddenly make the 10AS say, hey, the code is wrong and then when you query it, it will say ECU is immob. Well, like you mentioned you have a nanocom so check there first, if it's really immob, if so, then make the 10AS learn the ECU again and it should be well. if the alternator is faulty it can put the ignition light on very dim even when ignition off and key removed .
normally when the alternator does this there is a short inside that put light on dim and flattens battery |

thanks for the advice so far, batteries are all fine think alternators okay but will check, the defender is a standard hardtop and didn't come with and thrills,.
Is the 10AS a box behind the dashboard tt i've been reading about and if so do all defenders come with them regardless and as achuakh says it talks to the ecu, could I have some how dislodged a cable or something when I was rooting around with the stereo cables? Would like to check it with Nanocom but it stopped getting enough power up the cable the morning the rest went wrong. Still very confused. |

The 10AS is indeed the green box behind the dash/speedo panel, easy enough to remove the panel with 4 screws, one in each corner, the 10AS is a bit more fiddly due to limited access to the securing screws, to be honest though, you shouldn't really need to go there.
I wouldn't have thought it likely that disturbing the stereo wiring would worry it, the wiring to the 10AS connectors is generally pretty secure. When you say "the battery is OK" have you had a voltmeter on it? does the car still start, or at least turn over at a reasonable speed. One other point, when using the Nanocom Evo, you should always disconnect the OBD connector first, (the one on the car,) never undo the 15 pin connector between the NC and cable while powered up, I believe this can cause serious issues with the NC where it will need returning to BBS. |

cheers Clive, already aware of the Nanocom unplugging and been careful to follow procedure.
The car doesn't start at all can hear fuel pump and all lights come on as expected but then the red engine light comes on and as I turn the key further the power drops out ( have volt meter on dash) The car battery is reading 12.1volts. Seems funny that it happened directly after taking stereo out, maybe just bad timing and I'm barking up the wrong tree? |

Does seem odd, It would appear there's something draining the battery, you need to disconnect it and get it on a decent charger, once serviceable you need to get a current meter on there to identify the drain, it could of course be the alternator given up the ghost

Sounds to me the immobiliser is doing exactly what it's supposed to. Know anyone in your area with another Nanocom that may be able to confirm? If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Have you fitted new speakers as well as a new stereo?
Might sound a daft question but magnetic interference does some funny things to a 10as.... If the magnet of the new speaker is too close it can cause the vehicle to immobilise.... have had this issue on a customers Td5. That's interesting Porny, yes the speakers are new but have run with them for a couple of months now on the old stereo and also they are in the same location as the original defender speakers what was the issue you had exactly?
Unfortunately I cant get another nancom to plug in as even mine wont read the ecu due to the power lost on that cable. Everything else in the cab is fine all 12 volts. might have to give it over to the expensive people see what they make of it. |

Excuse my ignorance but I have absolutely no experience with a Nanocom but am an electrician. With the Puma diagnostics they are connected to the OBDII port. There is a single 12V feed to this port that comes off the battery and is protected by a fuse there are obviously earths, databus lines etc. It is from this supply my Puma diagnostic derives it's supply.
You mention "power lost to that cable." Surely if you go back to basics and cure the loss of power to "that cable" there is a strong possibility the Nanocom would burst into life and hopefully give an indication where your issues lie? Concentrate your efforts into that. What would happen if you 'jury rigged' (second time I've used that term today) an alternative 12V supply to "that cable" or the Nanocom 12V pin/socket and then connected the Nanocom? I've just been looking at the MY2002 schematics and there is a 5A fuse, Fuse 30, in the "Fuse Box Satellite (P109)" that feeds the 12V supply to both the Diagnostic socket and the Radio.
I'm not 100% sure where that particular fusebox is but I think it's the one next to the engine ECU under the drivers seat. By the way Worzel, I've got a Nanocom Evo if you need to double check anything and I'm not so far away from you. |

Clive I think you're onto something here!
You've probably dislodged a supply line or blown the fuse. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |
