South Africa 2010 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 SW Alpine White
After driving on a stretch of badly corrugated gravel road, the dash now seems to rattle even on tar.

Is there any way to tighten the damn thing? --
2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear
2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged

No, the actual dash itself was rattling itself loose. At one point SWAMBO had to brace herself against it to stop the rattling (not that it helped) --

the whole thing. Basically we were driving while pushing back against the round air vents to prevent excessive rattling. --

2012 Defender 90 Puma 2.2 HT Fuji White
Naks, did you find the source of your rattle? I have one behind the dash it sounds like its coming from behind the right hand round top vent, but against the firewall if you know what I mean, definitely in the cabin area. I have removed the centre panel and instrument binnacle numerous times to try and find it but still can't locate it. Its driving me .......... crazy.

There appears to be some electrical plugs and stuff in the centre of the dash area up high, behind the firewall insulation, wondering if its something in there vibrating on the firewall. I just can't reach it though with the dash in place.

I'm just about to pull the whole dash out to try and find it, do you think it could be the windscreen wiper mechanism inside the metal tube?

Yeah I know, desperate measure for a rattle, but I'm OCD Whistle as the lovely wife keeps telling me.

No, I never got around to it. Eventually we got used to the rattling on corrugated gravel roads Confused --

Hi Mick,

I had a similiar sound and appeared to be coming from around the top vent area, at one stage it was doing my head in, I tried holding the dash and this would make no difference at all, anyway one day the missus was in the Defender with me and I was complaining about the rattle again, and then she said it was coming from her door, so whipped the door panel off and tightened everything up, and lubricated door window runner and all is sorted now, no more rattle, so I suppose she does have her use's now and again Laughing
So all along sounded like the rattle was coming from dash, though it was from inside the door.

Naks, that's not good mate Wink I was hoping you'd have it all worked out and I could go straight to the source.

Schuee, that's interesting you say that I actually went looking in the engine bay this afternoon to see if it could be something in there radiating into the dash area, couldn't find anything obvious though. I will check the passenger side door and see what I can find there. Mine is the same no matter where you put pressure it doesn't stop it.

It's annoying the crap out of me, it was there about september last year when we did a 3 week road trip, got home went to look for it and it stopped. It has just reappeared about a month ago just as the cold weather hit, I'm wondering if something might be contracting in the cold and causing it to happen as it was chilly last september as well.

I'll get to the bottom of it somehow................hopefully Confused

Have not read all the thread. But have you thought about bonnet hinges? Try removing bonnet and have a test drive.

G'day lads. Well I checked to see if the noise happened to be coming from the door, bonnet or anywhere else but no good. So out came the dash, a bit of a pain it was too.

I didn't realise I would have to remove the floor matting and the transmission tunnel, well I didn't do that (transmission tunnel cover that is), I couldn't get the high/low lever off Embarassed So I loosened all of the screws and made enough room to get the bottom of the dash past it.

I have it all out including all of the aircon ducting and I'll be back at it tomorrow and see how I go.

If anybody knows how to remove the high/low lever can you please enlighten me.......... I know how to remove the gear lever

Remove top part of gear lever, remove rubber gaiters, remove foam soundproofing pad, remove four screws round base of transfer lever, unclip transfer box end of high/low selector linkage, withdraw transfer lever upwards.

It's illustrated in the thread about fitting bushes to the gear lever housing.

G'day Blackwolf, funny you replied I just found an old post of yours in relation to removing and re-greasing the wiper mechanism.

Thanks for the info its just the removing of the top section of the high/low lever I can't work out. Does it twist off, pull straight up or what?

Got the high/low lever off, it pulls off straight up just need to put a bit of oomph behind it.

Rattle found, it was the wiper mechanism inside the rack rattling. Removed it, regreased and then wrapped the rack tube with foam pipe lagging zip tied on tight.

Found a few other likely sources and sorted them as well. All back together and quiet as a mouse. The wipers working are soooo much quieter now Very Happy
