Leaking wheel cylinder
A mate has a LHD ex V8 (now a 300tdi) 110, on an E plate.
The issue he has is as follows;
The rear wheel brake cylinder (on the long side of the axle) leaks. So far he has done the following

Replaced cylinder with OE ones and NOS original ones
Replaced the cylinder seals with new ones
Replaced the brake drums on both sides (and also swapped them side to side)
Blown out the T piece for the brake pipe on the rear axle
Blown out the rear brake pipes
Checked the brake pressure using screw on pressure gauge that attaches to the bleed nipple (and pressure the same both sides)

The brakes where OK for a number of years and then in the last couple of years or so, the same side leaks.
After swapping the wheel cylinders etc the leak goes away for a while (not sure how long) but the leak does return.
So, any thoughts on the reason why one side always leaks.
Could it be anything to do with going from a V8 to a 300tdi (Disco engine?) The 110 used to live in the UK and now it resides in Northern Spain. 1999 Defender TD5 110

The drum brake parts available now are sadly rubbish no matter what make you buy. Sad but true. Best long term fix is to convert to discs.

Had to do my H reg 90 a few years ago as I got sick to death of playing drum brakes every few months.

aluminium cylinders don't last as long as the older cast iron ones

take it he has tried greasing the cylinder with RUBBER grease when fitting

The disc brake idea has been floated but the issue there is the Spanish ITV might not allow it.
I think he has greased the rubber when fitting. But why only one side leaking? 1999 Defender TD5 110

Silly question [or maybe not] but is the vehicle regularly parked for periods on a side slope? Reason for asking is that I had drum braked vehicle that, despite several replacement cylinders, leaked from one side but it only did it when parked for longish periods at a certain angle.

Never did get to the bottom of why it did it Shocked Steve.

My mate has just informed me that the issue has re-appeared again on the same side of the car/same wheel.

He is now pondering the option if replacing the master cylinder/servo to try and solve the issue.

Any more thoughts would be most welcome 1999 Defender TD5 110
