The same can be monitored if you used 8 hall effect sensors for example, within the gear lever housing for lever position. This might be expensive for manufacture not to mention the extra wiring required.

A Gear box input shaft speed sensor would do the same job as fitted to semi auto`s / fully automatic, as soon as the clutch is engauged the main shaft will rotate thus informing the ecu of transmission speed.
All good fun if you have a dragging clutch. Your semi auto box has now become a box full of problems, any comfort matic owners out there will understand. Big Cry Excuse the spelling I`am better with spanners and wires.

as mentioned elsewhere I've got clutch problems and it would appear the clutch is dragging intermittently. my understanding is the ECM has a torq sensor and this is in part is why you see the engine revs drop to 800 rpm with no load / no speed from 900rpm. consider the clutch switch informs the ECM to reduce torq when changing gears to help with gear harmonisation / smoother gear changes. now if everything thing is working as it should except for an intermittently dragging clutch and perhaps you get a pig of a truck to drive with intermittent diabolical gear changes that can't be predicted and as a result has greatly speeded up the wear on my drive flanges - possible?
