OEM batteries seem to last for 8-9 years (£170), or you can get a 900 amp Yuasa battery with 5 year guarantee for £130 or less.Cost-co sell Bosch batteries pretty cheap, unless your after extra performance just another (cheaper) option .

+1 for Costco. I have a S5 Bosch battery in my Defender for a few years now, it's a direct replacement for the original OEM. Battery. Great performance and it was £99 when I bought it 3/4 years ago. Also comes with 5 year warranty. I thinks the specs (CCA & AH) are same or better than OEM.

Odyssey batteries are great and would be my choice, it is a good quality that won't suffer should it be run down, unlike standard type batteries.
Brought mine from Devon 4x4 who were by far the cheapest I could find and they did free postage. Andy |

^^^good point, I damaged a previous battery after a current drain problem left the battery flat for a few weeks.
If you're still looking for Odyssey, then these guys seem to have a fair price too... http://www.griffinbatterycentres.co.uk/com...ery/14-162 cheers simon |

I have used Odyssey PC1700 and although I like them they do not seem to last long. My last pair died after 4 years, which, I am told is not bad for Odyssey ! Now running Optima which have not lasted well, 2 years old and starting to loose charge.
Bosche / Varta or OEM seem to be the way to go. Unfortunately they won't fit in the space for my twin set up ! 2007 TD5 90 Hard Top |

Not good to hear that, at £200-250 per battery..! I have seen a twin battery tray that will take two S5 Bosch batteries (the OEM size), so may consider that. As I already have 1 x S5 it would be a saving as another is only £100-ish. The battery tray is a bit more that the Devon type @£125. I was hoping a deep discharge capable battery like the Odyssey would last longer for running accessories, but if that isn't the case it doesn't make much sense to use them. cheers simon |

Thanks all.
Don't need a dual charge system as no fridge or winch, so one large battery is fine. The Odyssey PC1700 is about the same size as the existing LR original. The cheapest I can find it is on Amazon at £218.25. I will however be contacting Tim and Brendan to see what they can do on pricing as I've had bits from them both recently and their service is great. Cheers, Andy Defender Td5 XS90 |

Bear in mind that whilst the Odyssey may well be a "deep cycle" it's got a substantially lower Ah rating than the stock battery.
In a lot of circumstances this won't make a jot of difference as the CCA/Ah ratio is higher but it is worth noting. |

Given all of the above comments, what is the real world advantages of fitting an Odyssey battery in place of the Bosch S5 (for example)...?

They can take a licking but keeps on ticking
Basically a more forgiving battery if abused. Will also stand being tipped over, heavily discharged and high amperage discharge with a winch etc. Thats why they seem to be popular in winch challenges and extreme events. However if I can find two batteries that will fit my tray ill try something different next time. 2007 TD5 90 Hard Top |

If your worried about weekly discharge,is a solar powered, battery trickle charger not an option? FWIW, I only use mine once or twice a week and touch wood I've not had any battery issues,(that was a kiss of death I'm sure ). Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.
