Here we go again! Mark prepare to have your thread hijacked. You'll not need to do anything but monitor this one. Caterham's relentless pusuit for 'non faults' and his doggedness to spend time and money on a cure for them is well documented and quite amusing. Caterham,
I really don't care and am not about to go and have a look. I had similar issues on each of my three Discoverys where the oil was leaking from the centre of my front wheels an indication the seals had gone. Lubrication is lubrication, oil used to go in both but they then decided that one shot grease in one and oil in the other was the better option. I was advised by a very reliable source it didn't matter so I left well alone and all was fine. This is quite common.....
It is not a big issue....All will be fine leave well alone! Read on for more info..... http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic26598....swivel+oil http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic23985....swivel+oil http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic23675....swivel+oil
Above quote taken from this thread..... http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic12141....swivel+oil 'Swivel Oil' in the search throws up 48 threads. The information you seek is already here on the forum......look for it. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! I changed oil in both front and rear diff a month ago. Never done it before since I had the vehicle for just about a year. The oil in the rear diff was in a nice condition but the front was totally black.
I just filled up with new oil and topped up with swivel grease and will run it for another year and then probably only change oil in front diff. Unless some other suggestions comes up in this thread /Hans |

Phew.... (mal - )
So it seems the front is typically coming out black, but why - is it to do with the steering and as such the diff does more work (having thought about it does it actually do anymore than the rear)? |

After reading the other treads on this subject I am convinced that it is swivel grease contamination. But as long the diff is ok with some grease in the oil I am happy with it as well. But I think that I will change oil in the front diff once a year.

That's OK, I'm finished with the thread anyway. I rebuilt the hubs and the oil is still fairly clean after 2 months and about 1100 miles. http://defender90xs.blogspot.co.uk/2014/04...ement.html http://defender90xs.blogspot.co.uk/ |

I've just drained the front again after c1000 miles and the oil was far from clear? This together with the rumbling I get when slowing down makes me think something isn't as it should be? |

on one of mine i removed the seals at the end of the axles tubes to allow the two to meet, quite a few do this as a matter of course.
i would worry about it. Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

Brill so that suggests I can use the diff oil for the hubs.
Will do a search to see how much oil goes in the hubs (presumably they're filled via the sump plugs on the top?). |

I was always told oil in front hubs is better than grease , and I believe that it is
the one shot grease tubes were only done to save changing the hub seals , a bodge job really I was told if hub will hold oil then use oil ! Last edited by munch90 on 21st Jun 2014 4:53am. Edited 1 time in total |

I did have a slight oil leak from the swivel seals but the stealer fixed that and it's now OK. This is our third Deafener (for some yet be found reason ) but it's the first to do this. Ford cost cutting and meddling perhaps?

don't forget if the hubs have grease already in them ,you need to strip them down and clean all the grease out IF you only want oil in them or add a bit of oil to the grease not full amount if your worried about wear in axle , as you drain the oil run it over a magnet as it drains to check for metal or fit a magnetic plug |
